Racing returns to Wells County Fairgrounds May 16

The race track at the Wells County fairgrounds in Fessenden will soon feature racing, but of a different type of four-legged variety.

The first Dachshund Dash Wiener Dog Races will be held Sunday, May 16, at 1:00 p.m.

Wiener dog races have gained in popularity and are held in North Dakota and neighboring states. The races, often referred to as Doxie races, will feature several heats depending on age. There are even races for the “wannabe” doxies.

The races will feature “Cocktail Franks,” puppies up to seven months old; “Frankfurters,” eight months to two years; “Wienerschnitzels,” three to eight years old; “Brotwursts,” nine years and older; “Wiener Wannabes,” for any small breed dog that fits into a two-foot by two-foot box.

In addition, there will be a best dressed doxie competition, along with raffles and prizes.

To register doxies for the Wells County race, go to http://www.facebook.com/wellscounty4h. For more information about the race, contact Carrie Opdahl at 701-341-8910.

The upcoming race in Fessenden will be held to raise money for the Wells County 4-H Explorers group.

In addition to the inaugural dog races, there is even more fun planned for the day at the fairgrounds.

A Pioneer Gospel Hour and Worship Service will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. in the grandstand.

The Wells County Fair Board is holding the second annual Junk & Disorderly junk fair. The vendor and craft show will be held on the grounds from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Vendor booths are available. Contact Mary at (701) 947-5476.

Kathy Tebelius will be offering craft classes in the afternoon.

Concessions will be available. A request was made for the wienermobile to make a stop at the fairgrounds during the event.

Plan to attend the first Wells County Doxie Dash Sunday, May 16, at the Wells County Fairgrounds in Fessenden.
