Hunter Genre has had quite the year. This eighth grader at New Rockford-Sheyenne has seen some highs and lows. His family nearly lost everything in their home, including his bow and arrows, due to a fire in March.
With the help of community members, Genre was able to obtain a new bow and finish out the 2021 archery season with a bang. He put on quite a show shooting for the NASP National Archery Tournament, held virtually in the NR-S gym on March 20 and 22. When the results were announced Friday, he learned that he had finished second in the middle school boys division in the 3D Tournament and eighth in the bullseye tournament.
Genre placed second out of 888 competitors in the open nationals. He shot a 293, with a total of 23 tens. Genre also competed in the bullseye tournament where he received eighth place out of 3,611, with a score of 293 and 23 tens as well.
Including Genre, a total of 16 Rocket archers competed in the National Archery Tournament. They qualified to compete based on their scores in the state tournament.
Sixth grader Layton Jacobson was another successful archer for New Rockford-Sheyenne. Jacobson competed in both the 3D and bullseye competitions. He placed 26th out of 3,611 competitors in the bullseye portion. Jacobson shot a 289 with a total of 21 tens.
There will be a short celebration recognizing Genre and Jacobson at NR-S on Monday, May 17 at 3 p.m. in the gymnasium. All the staff and students are invited, as well as the general public.Senior Koven Walford shot a 286 with 20 tens in the 3D tournament to receive 51st place out of 765. Walford also competed in the bullseye tournament where he placed 101st, with a score of 289 and 21 tens.
Sawyer Huso competed in the elementary boys bullseye division. Huso placed 87th, with a score of 266 and a total of five tens.
Harvey and Kensal archery teams also competed in the National Archery Tournament.
