For the month of September, we’re looking at our identity. While the world seeks to tell us who we are and how we identify ourselves, we’re going to look to the Bible. What does God have to say about who we are? Last week, we began at the beginning. Above all else, we are created. We didn’t happen by chance, but by careful intentionality. That being said, there is another fundamental aspect to God creating us that must be addressed. When God stated His intention to create us, He gave it a specific description: “in our image.” Presumably, God the father is talking to the trinity when He says this because later verses shorten it to “in God’s image.”
Mankind, both men and women, are created in the image of God. Now, this is a topic that many unstable words have been written about. I say ‘unstable’ because its impossible to say exactly how we are in the image of God because we can’t know God perfectly. So, I’ll keep this one short and to the point. God did not create mankind as an experiment. This wasn’t a trial or anything like that. He wasn’t making weird little pets. When God created us, He created us in His likeness. Our core design echoes God’s own nature. Again, the temptation is to try and nail down precisely what we echo about God, but we need to avoid that. The beauty is in the simplicity. Who are you? You are created by God. Not only that, but inside of each of us is an echo, a reflection of the almighty. All that is sinful, broken and evil about us has been added later. At our core, when we rolled off the assembly line, we were designed to reflect God.
Every human, no matter how holy or how fallen, how young or how old, how liberal or how conservative has the image of God built in to them. Who are you? Who am I? We are image-bearers for the almighty creator of heaven and earth, and nothing can change that.
