Netters take first at Lakota Tourney

On Saturday, Sept. 11, the New-Rockford Sheyenne varsity volleyball team competed in the Lakota Invitational. The tournament was divided into two pools, with a total of seven teams competing. The Rockets were in Pool B and were scheduled to play against Griggs-Midkota JV, Rolla, and Barnes County North. In Pool A was Carrington JV, Griggs-Midkota, and Nelson County.

The Rockets had a very successful turnout at the Lakota Invitational. To start off the tournament, the Rockets were scheduled to compete against Griggs-Midkota junior varsity. The Rockets defeated the Titans 25-13 in the first set and 25-12 in the second set.

Next up, Rolla. The Bulldogs started off strong and pulled off a win in the first set 25-19. The Rockets came back hot and defeated the Bulldogs 25-18. Little did the Rockets know that they would see the Bulldogs again later in the day.

After a two-game break, the Rockets were ready to take on the Barnes County North Bison, whom they recently played on Thursday, Sept. 9. The Rockets defeated the Bison 25-10 in the first set and 25-14 in the second set.

Now to play the local rivals, the junior varsity Carrington Cardinals. Carrington and New Rockford have always been rivals, even though they are currently no longer in our region nor district. While the Rockets were nervous about this match up, they were able to pull off a 26-24 win in the first set and a 25-12 win in the second set.

With the Rockets only losing one set, they would move on to play for the championship against... guess who? The Rolla Bulldogs. After playing the Bulldogs earlier in the day, the Rockets knew what to expect. The Rockets would defeat the Bulldogs 25-22 in the first set and 25-14 in the second set to take first place in the Lakota Invitational.

Throughout the tournament, sophomore Kelsie Belquist held the most kills. Belquist had a total of 33 kills, with Mya Cudworth behind her with 20, Madisen Myhre with 17, Kaiya O'Connor with 12, and Ava Peterson with 10.
