Rockets fight for third at Devils Lake Tournament

The New Rockford-Sheyenne varsity volleyball team traveled to Devils Lake on Saturday, Sept. 25 to compete in the Devils Lake Volleyball Tournament. The Rockets placed third out of 12 teams.

With middle hitter Macey Wobbema out, and middle hitter Lora Wobbema at the JV tournament in Carrington, senior Maria Becker and sophomore Lucy Meier stepped in to take their place as middle hitters.

The first pool play matchup of the day was against the Grafton Spoilers. The Spoilers defeated the Rockets 25-17 in the first set, and 25-21 in the second set.

Next up in pool play was Super Region 4 competitor, the St. John Woodchucks. The Rockets defeated the Woodchucks 25-14 in the first set, and 25-20 in the second set.

The Bottineau Stars were next on the bracket. The Stars were defeated 25-8 in the first set and 25-12 in the second set.

The Rockets received the second seed in Pool C, and placed in the fourth seed for the tournament play.

After a two hour wait, the Rockets could continue on to tournament play. The first matchup in tournament play were the Nedrose Cardinals. The Rockets defeated the Cardinals 25-22 in the first set, and 25-16 in the second set.

Next up in tournament play was yet another Super Region 4 competitor, The North Star Bearcats. The Rockets knew they were in for a tough competition, as the Bearcats hadn't lost a single set all day. Bearcats middle hitter Danielle Hagler received her 2,000th kill at the tournament. The matchup between the Bearcats and Rockets was a very intense match to watch, with Hagler and Kelsie Belquist battling it out at the net. The Rockets put up a fight, but the Bearcats came out with a win in the first set 25-18, and also in the second set 25-15.

With the loss to the Bearcats, the Rockets would then move on to the third and fourth bracket, and the Bearcats would move on to the championship bracket.

After a tough loss to North Star, the Rockets knew they had to finish the tournament off strong to take home third place. The Rockets defeated the Velva Aggies 25-24 in the first set, and 25-23 in the second set.

The Aggies received fourth place and the Rockets received third place. North Star defeated Grafton to take first in the tournament.

Belquist held the most kills for the Rockets with 47. Mya Cudworth and Madisen Myhre came in behind Belquist with 26 each.

Senior Kennedy Demester led with the most digs for the Rockets with a total of 52. Also in double digits for the Rockets was Belquist with 41, Cudworth with 38, Kaiya O'Connor with 27, Alexa Holth with 22, Ava Peterson with 11 and Myhre with 10.

O'Connor received a total of 83 assists at the Devils Lake tournament. Peterson was also in double digits for the Rockets with 15 total assists.

The Rockets contributed a total of 11 blocks. Myhre and Peterson had four each, Meier received two and Becker received one.

On the other hand, aces were hot for the Rockets. A total of 37 aces were served during the tournament. Cudworth held the most with 11, with Demester behind with ten. Other aces came from O'Connor with eight, Belquist with seven and Myhre with one.

The New Rockford-Sheyenne junior varsity team traveled to Carrington on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Rockets competed with seven other teams including Medina/Pingree-Buchanan, Carrington "B", Valley City, Jamestown, Barnes County North, Carrington "C" and Harvey/Wells County.

The Rockets were placed in Pool A. The first matchup of the day was against the Carrington "B" team. The Cardinals defeated the Rockets 25-11 in the first set, and 25-19 in the second set.

The Rockets next competitor was the Valley City Hi-Liners. The Hi-Liners defeated the Rockets 25-15 in the first set, and 25-9 in the second set.

The third match of the day was against the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder. The Thunder defeated the Rockets 25-15 in the first set, but the Rockets came back in the second set to defeat the Thunder 25-23.

After the split with the Thunder, the Rockets were seeded #4 in the pool. The Rockets would move on to take on the fourth seed of pool B, which was the Barnes County North Bison. The Rockets defeated the Bison 25-13 in the first set, and 25-17 in the second set.

New Rockford-Sheyenne Public School hosted a junior high volleyball tournament on Saturday, Sept. 25. The tournament consisted of five seventh-grade teams and six eighth-grade teams including Carrington, Harvey/Wells County, Four Winds-Minnewaukan, Griggs-Midkota and Nelson County.

The seventh grade team competed against Harvey/Wells County, Carrington, Four Winds/Minnewaukan and Griggs-Midkota. The seventh grade team lost every set, other than one against Four Winds/Minnewaukan.

The eighth grade team competed against Harvey/Wells County, Griggs-Mikdota and Nelson County, winning all sets against each team.
