Rockets send Hornets back to the hive

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets hosted the Harvey/Wells County Hornets on Thursday, Sept. 16. The Rockets defeated the Hornets 3-2.

The Rockets seemed very nervous about this Super Region 4 match up against the Hornets. They started off very rocky, letting the Hornets get away with a 25-21 win in the first set, and a 25-22 win in the second set.

After losing the first two sets, the Rockets shook off the nerves and began to play like winners. The Rockets defeated the Hornets 25-18 in the third set, and 25-13 in the fourth set. Then they came through and defeated them in the fifth and final set of the night 25-10.

Kelsie Belquist led the Rockets in kills with a total of 26. Behind Belquist was Madisen Myhre with nine and Ava Peterson with five. Senior Kalyn Keller held the most kills for the Hornets with a total of 12, with Carsyn Ziegler also in double digits with ten and Lexi Fike with eight.

Rockets' setter Kaiya O'Connor had a total of 33 assists, with Peterson behind with eight. Hornets setter Kayme Bartz had a total of 18 assists, with Zada Wiedmeier behind with nine.

The Rockets received a total of 121 digs where the Hornets only received 97. Libero Kennedy Demester led with 30 digs. Other top diggers for the Rockets were O'Connor with 26, Belquist with 21, Peterson with 18, Cudworth with 16, Myhre and Alexa Holth both with four, and Lora Wobbema and Delana Thomas each with one. Top diggers for the Hornets were Fike with 33, Keller and Emma Dockter with 22 each, and Ziegler with 20.

O'Connor, Peterson and Demester all tied with two aces each, giving the Rockets a total of six aces. Fike and Keller brought in three aces each, and Addy Neumiller and Wiedmeier brought in two each, to bring the Hornets total to ten.

The Rockets scored on two blocks and the Hornets had a total of zero blocks. O'Connor and Myhre were the lone blockers for the Rockets with one each.

The New Rockford-Sheyenne B-squad and C-squad were also victorious on Thursday night. The B-squad defeated the Hornets 25-22 in the first set, 25-19 in the second set, and 15-10 in the third. The C-squad defeated the Hornets 25-22 in the first, 25-13 in the second, and 17-15 in the third.

The eighth grade team and seventh grade team weren't as victorious. The eighth grade Hornets defeated the eighth grade Rockets team 25-18 in the first set, and 25-12 in the second set. The seventh grade Hornets defeated the Rockets seventh grade team 25-11 in the first, and 25-19 in the second.
