Rockets compete in Carrington Tourney

New Rockford-Sheyenne was among 11 other teams to compete in the Carrington Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 9. The Carrington Cardinals finished first place after a 2-0 win over Strasburg-Zeeland.

The Rockets were not on top of their game on Saturday. The Rockets first matchup of the day in pool play was against the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder. The Thunder defeated the Rockets 25-19 in the first set and 25-20 in the second set.

With a tough loss to the Thunder, the Rockets woke up for the second matchup against the Bishop Ryan Lions. The Rockets defeated the Lions 27-26 in the first set and 25-23 in the second.

Next up in pool play were the Central McLean Cougars. The Rockets defeated the Cougars 25-23 in the first set and 26-24 in the second set.

With only two set losses in pool play, the Rockets got the sixth seed in the tournament bracket. The Rockets were to take on the No. 11 seed, the Griggs-Midkota Titans. The Titans defeated the Rockets 25-16 in the first set and 25-20 in the second set.

The Rockets had a total of 10 blocks in the whole tournament. Junior Madisen Myhre held the most with four blocks, Kelsie Belquist was behind her with two, and Mya Cudworth, Kaiya O'Connor, Macey Wobbema and Maria Becker all with one each.

Belquist led the Rockets in kills with a total of 33, averaging four kills per set. Also in double digits for the Rockets were Cudworth with 23 and Myhre with 19.

Libero Kennedy Demester and Belquist were very close in digs on Saturday. Demester had a total of 38 digs, and Belquist was one shy with 37 digs. O'Connor, Cudworth and Peterson all made double digits with 28 for O'Connor, 24 for Cudworth and 14 for Peterson.

O'Connor held the most assists for the Rockets with 76, averaging nine assists per set. Myhre and Belquist came in behind her with three each, Delana Thomas had two, and Cudworth and Demester each had one.

A total of 18 points were scored on aces, with Cudworth serving the most with eight. Belquist had a total of four aces, Demester had three, O'Connor had two, and Alexa Holth had one.

This tournament was the last tournament the six NR-S seniors competed in. The Rockets only have a handful of games left before regionals on Nov. 8, so make sure to go out and support the Rockets in their regular season.
