Duchscherer hits 100 win mark at NR-S dual

If nothing else, NR-S senior and Carrington wrestler Matthew Duchscherer has a great sense of timing.
Duchscherer's night in the spotlight at the NR-S High School Gym on Tuesday, November 23, featured him attaining a personal milestone. The 132-pounder took his 100th career victory in a first-period pin over Oakes' Noah Wood.
It was one of five falls the Cardinals would get in a 48-33 win over the Tornadoes to start the dual portion of their season.
The two teams exchanged pins and forfeits in the first four weight classes before Duchscherer put the Cards up 18-12. The Tornadoes' Blaine Wald got a narrow 2-1 win against Corbin Clifton at 138 to draw within 18-15, but Brecken Lura gave CHS breathing room with a pin at 145, and Oakes was open at 152 to give the Cards a bigger cushion with a 30-15 lead.
Oakes would get a big pin in the 160-pound match, as John German came from behind to shock Logan Weninger with a late pin with just seconds left to trail, 30-21.
Carrington got big performances in their upper middle classes to clinch the match. Joe Lindberg started the fireworks with a pin over Brogan Roney at 170, followed by Michael Clifton's pin at 182, and freshman Callen Garber taking charge with a second-period fall at 195 to conclude the Cardinal scoring.
Each team got 12 free points from forfeits. The Cards did not field wrestlers at 126 and 285 pounds.
Next up for Carrington will be their home duals Friday night, December 10. The Cards will take on Minot at 4 p.m., followed by New Salem-Almont at 5 p.m., Napoleon at 6 p.m., and Pembina County North at 7 p.m. in the nightcap.
On Saturday, the team will be hosting the Al Larson Carrington Invitational Tournament at Carrington High School. The tournament starts at 10 a.m., and is expected to draw 15 teams.
