Rockets take sixth at annual CNDC tourney

The New Rockford-Sheyenne girls basketball team traveled to Rugby on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-4, to compete in the annual CNDC tournament.

The Rockets started off the tournament slow. The Lady Raiders from Drake-Anamoose came out of the gates ready to win. The Rockets, on the other hand, simply didn't have one of their better games. With senior starter Mya Cudworth out due to an ankle injury, eighth grader Ava Peterson would take her place in the starting lineup.

Drake-Anamoose took a five-point lead in the first quarter and didn't stop. At the end of the first half, the Lady Raiders were ahead 20-9.

After the third quarter, the Rockets were down 20-35. Nothing could stop the Lady Raiders. The Rockets were defeated by the Lady Raiders 41-31, just a ten-point difference.

Lead scorers for the Lady Raiders were Riley Hauff with 14 points, Halie Fletschock with 12 and Taryn Sieg with 10. The only Rocket player to score in double digits on Thursday night was Kennedy Demester with 10, with six points coming from three-pointers.

The Rugby Panthers defeated the Rolla Bulldogs 68-43 in the opening round of the CNDC tournament. The Panthers would then move on to take on the Lady Raiders on Friday, Dec. 3. The Bulldogs would move on to take on the Rockets.

The Harvey/Wells County Hornets defeated the TGU Titans 59-48. The Glenburn Panthers defeated the St. John Lady Woodchucks 47-45. The Hornets would then take on the Glenburn Panthers and the Lady Woodchucks would move on to play the TGU Titans.

The second day of the CNDC tournament was a lot more interesting. The Rockets played phenomenal. Yes, you read that right. PHENOMENAL. Even though the match-up between the Bulldogs and the Rockets was a close game, it definitely kept fans on their toes.

The Rockets started off slow in the first quarter, trailing the Bulldogs 10-15. The Rockets came back in the second quarter to take a one-point lead 24-23. After a half-time pep talk from coaches Elliott Belquist and Craig Demester, the Rockets were ready to rock. The third quarter ended with the Rockets ahead by seven.

Did you really think the Region 4 competitors were going to give away a win that easily? The Bulldogs came back in the fourth quarter to tie the score 52-52 at the buzzer.

Next up, four minutes of overtime. The Rockets were ahead by two until a buzzer-beater was shot. Which meant yet another four minutes of overtime. It was a nailbiter.

The Bulldogs have many players that are great at three-point shots. With that being known, the Rockets had to play outstanding defense to not allow Morgan Leas, Rylee Hanlan, Jenna Rosinski and Carmen Elick shoot from the three-point line. The Rockets were able to defeat the Bulldogs 61-59.

Leas led the Bulldogs with a total of 24 points scored. Hanlan also scored in double digits with 13 points. Top scorers for the Rockets were Kelsie Belquist with 18 points, Ava Peterson with 15, and Kennedy Demester with 11.

The Rockets would move on to play the St. John Woodchucks for fifth and sixth place and the Bulldogs moved on to play the TGU Titans for seventh and eighth place.

The Rugby Panthers defeated the Drake-Anamoose Lady Raiders 57-23 to earn a seat in the championship round.

The Harvey/Wells County Hornets defeated the Glenburn Panthers 52-48. The Hornets would then take on the Rugby Panthers in the championship round and the Glenburn Panthers moved on to play the Lady Raiders for third and fourth place.

At last, the final day of the CNDC tournament. The Rockets met up with yet another Region 4 competitor, the St. John Lady Woodchucks.

Although the Lady Woodchucks have a young team, they also have a very competitive team. At the end of the first quarter, the Rockets and Lady Woodchucks were tied 17-17. At the end of the second quarter, the Lady Woodchucks took a 25-21 lead.

The Rockets gave up many points in the third quarter, letting the Lady Woodchucks take a ten-point lead. With four minutes left on the clock during the fourth quarter, the Rockets came back fighting, only down by four. The Rockets began a full-court press, which helped in their favor by getting the ball back, but no shots were made. The Rockets took the tough loss of 50-46. The Lady Woodchucks would take fifth place, and the Rockets would take sixth place in the tournament.

Top scorers for the Lady Woodchucks were Kaydence Decoteau with 11 and Alani Morin with 10. Kennedy Demester led the Rockets with 18 points. Kelsie Belquist also scored in double digits with 16 points.
