Cemetery Association receives extra funds from grave marker fundraiser

In November, we brought you the story of the community effort to purchase and install stones for four individuals with unmarked graves, who are buried in the local cemetery.

In little more than a week, the quest for $2,000 turned up nearly double the initial request. With more than $1700 over the initial request received, the Women's Auxiliary Cemetery Association (WACA) was the fortunate recipient of these funds. The check was deposited earlier this month.

"I'm grateful that we live in a community that cares," said WACA Secretary Kathy O'Connor, as Transcript publisher Amy Wobbema presented her with the funds.

The cemetery association seeks feedback on a worthy use of the funds. Since the effort was initiated by individuals, O'Connor said WACA members would like to see the dollars put towards a specific project rather than general support.

Although four individuals now have proper recognition at their final resting places, many more are unmarked and undocumented.

The list published below was compiled by Evans Funeral Home in 1998, and notes graves at various cemeteries in Eddy County that are believed to lack markers.

Readers with additional information about any of the individuals named below, including dates of birth and death, or if a stone has been placed since the list was compiled, should contact Kathy O'Connor at (701) 302-0148 or email [email protected], or David Bymoen at (701) 652-5951.

O'Connor said that many of the individuals are also not archived in findagrave.com, the world's largest online resource for documenting burials. Her goal is to make sure that all graves are listed so people can locate their loved ones' graves.

The full list of unmarked graves is published in the print edition and also in the online pdf.
