Duchscherer, Kramlich compete at Rumble on the Red tourney

Among the biggest high school, junior high and youth wrestling tournaments in the country, the Rumble on the Red, held December 29-30, never ceases to bring the best talent in the upper Midwest to the Fargodome floor.

The Carrington wrestling team, fielding four varsity competitors, and eight in the junior varsity brackets, finished in 44th place overall with 28.5 team points.

Jackson Co. Central, a Minnesota school located in the southwest corner of the state, took the team title with 156.5 points, and Twin Cities suburb Stillwater was second, scoring 145.5. The highest North Dakota finisher was traditional power Bismarck High (111.5), taking third.

Senior 138-pounder Brecken Lura was the top finisher for the Cardinal varsity, winning four out of his six matches to take seventh place. Among those victories included a technical fall, two decision wins and a pin, along with a close loss to Minot's Victor Garcia in the winners' bracket.

Returning from injury was Matthew Duchscherer at 126. In his first action since the Carrington Duals, he got two wins out of the gate before falling in his next two trips to the circle and finishing short of placing.

In the 170-pound class, Michael Clifton took his first two defeats this season, after dropping a thin 9-8 decision and a 5-3 loss to two Minnesota wrestlers.

Trace Hoggarth also went 1-2 at 113 pounds after a first-round pinfall win, but fell by pin and major decision in his following bouts.

The top overall performance from the Cards came from Kael Kovar in the 152 JV class. Kovar, a junior, rolled to a 7-1 record, with his only defeat coming in 4-3 heartbreaker fashion to West Fargo Sheyenne's Sawyer Carr.

Seventh grader Nic Garber was the other Carrington placer at 126 JV, taking home eighth place. Garber won four of seven matches, with two pins, a major decision and a medical forfeit among his results.

Just missing out on the placement rounds was Joe Lindberg at 160 JV, who went 4-2 at the Rumble. Additional jayvees who won two matches each included Skye Kramlich (85), Gabe Clifton (95), and Max Ciubotareanu and Jonathan Lura, both competing at 170. Dru Carr went 1-2 in the 106-pound junior varsity class.

The Cards were in action this past Friday and Saturday at the Bismarck Rotary Tournament, and several CHS grapplers will be in action at the State JV/Junior High Championships this Saturday at the Carrington school complex.

Next up for the Cardinal varsity matmen will be the Nick Storhaug Invitational Tournament in Lisbon on January 21.
