Duchscherer sixth, Kramlich first in JV at Bismarck Rotary

Thanks to three top-eight finishers, the Carrington Cardinal wrestlers finished in 17th place overall at the large school-dominated Bismarck Rotary Tournament, held Friday and Saturday, January 7-8, at the Event Center.

A pair of South Dakota schools, Watertown and Rapid City Stevens, occupied the top two team finishes with just two points separating the Arrows from the Raiders (205.5 to 203.5). Sidney, Montana was third with 187, and Bismarck and Minot rounded out the top five. The Cards had 70 points, just one behind Williston, and ahead of both Fargo North and Grand Forks Central.

Senior Michael Clifton was the top finisher, taking runner-up at 182 pounds. Three pins and a 4-3 decision win in the semis pitted Clifton against defending Class A 170-pound champion Brock Fettig of Bismarck. Clifton had a rough time in the finals, falling by a 17-4 major decision.

At 138, Brecken Lura took fifth with wins in three of five matches. The senior would advance to the semifinals before taking a 13-6 loss, and dropped a tough one-point decision to a Watertown wrestler in the consolation bracket before finishing his weekend with a pin.

Matthew Duchscherer was sixth at 132 pounds, and did much of his point-scoring in the wrestlebacks after a quarterfinal loss. Two wins in consolation rounds put him in the placement brackets, where he took two losses to end up at 3-3.

Kael Kovar was one win away from placing at 152 pounds, going an even 2-2, and Trace Hoggarth had a first round win at 113 before taking two losses and dropping out of placement contention.

In the junior varsity tournament, two Cardinals won their groups. Skye Kramlich took the 95C bracket, and Joe Lindberg got two wins at 160A, to clinch that division. Gabe Clifton (95B) took second place and Dru Carr (106C) was third.
