Despite mother nature's winter weather advisory, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets trekked to Fessenden to take on the Harvey/Wells County Hornets. The Rockets came up short, losing 47-49.
This was the first District 7 win for the Hornets this season, after recently losing to the Benson County Wildcats, and the Nelson County Chargers. As for the Rockets, this was their second District 7 loss.
Senior Kalyn Keller of the Hornets had an outstanding game. If she wasn't in the key shooting, she would be found at the three-point line. Keller went 5-for-7 at the line, scored six field goals and two three-pointers. Keller was the only Hornet player to score in double digits with 23 points.
With three-pointers from Lexi Fike and Keller, the Hornets led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The Rockets also trailed the Hornets in the second quarter 19-26, and the third quarter 33-44. Three-pointers were huge for the Hornets in the third quarter, with one from Keller, one from Emma Dockter and one from Carsyn Ziegler. As for the Rockets, Mya Cudworth, Kelsie Belquist, Ava Peterson and Kennedy Demester were sent to the free-throw line multiple times in the second and third quarters. The Rockets went 9-for-17 at the line.
The fourth quarter went much smoother for the Rockets. By slowing down Keller and Dockter, the Rockets were able to add up a total of 14 points in the fourth quarter. With five seconds left on the clock, the Rockets set up a play to let Demester shoot a three-pointer. The play was successful. With three seconds to go, the Hornets held the ball away from the Rockets to win 49-47.
Lead scorers for the Rockets were Belquist with 11, Peterson with 10, and Demester and Cudworth each with nine.
