Victory is oh so sweet

Rockets defeat Mustangs at annual Class B Day

The annual Class B Day Jamboree was held at Sweetwater Elementary and the Sports Center gymnasium in Devils Lake on Saturday, Jan. 15.

The Rockets were among nine other girls' basketball teams to compete. The Rockets versus the Midway/Minto Mustangs was the first game of the day.

Unlike the past few games for the New Rockford-Sheyenne girls, the Rockets were able to come out victorious, leaving the Mustangs in the dust 69-33.

The start of the game went miraculously well. Kaiya O'Connor was able to break away after the tip from Kelsie Belquist to score with a layup to the basket. O'Connor put in two more field goals along with two free-throws, with Belquist, Mya Cudworth, Madisen Myhre and Ava Peterson putting in at least one field goal. The Rockets held a 10-point lead on the Mustangs at the end of the first quarter.

Senior Kennedy Demester came out strong in the second quarter, putting in two of her six three-pointers. Belquist also put in a three-pointer in the second quarter, keeping a 14-point lead over the Mustangs.

This was not the end of the three-pointers for the Rockets. Demester put in three more three-pointers in the third quarter. Belquist and O'Connor each put up one three-pointer along with Demester's three. Cudworth went to work under the hoop to put in three field goals. The Rockets scored a season high 27 points in the third quarter. Emma McMillan and Khaleela Korynta put in a three-pointer each for the Mustangs, but it simply wasn't enough.

There was no stopping the Rockets. Demester put in her final three-pointer of the day in the fourth quarter, along with O'Connor. Peterson and Belquist were both sent to the line to put in a total of three free-throws. The Rockets finished the game 7-for-10 at the line, and with a total of 10 three-pointers between Demester, O'Connor and Belquist.

Scoring in double digits for the Rockets were Demester with 18, O'Connor with 15, Belquist with 14 and Cudworth with 10.

As for the Mustangs, Sophie Schuster and Maddy Korynta led the team with eight points each.
