Meier brothers excel on both sides of the ball
This non-district boys' basketball game between the Rockets and the Wilton/Wing Miners was very similar to the first half of the game in the recent District 7 matchup between the Rockets and the FW/M Indians.
The Region 5 Miners came into this game sitting 5-0 in Region 5, and 8-3 overall, sitting behind Flasher.
Although this game wasn't a district or regional game for either team, it was a great competition for the Rockets and the Miners.
The Miners are very fast paced, similar to the FW/M Indians. With every opportunity, they were driving to the basket or taking shots at the 3-point line. The Miners also followed their shots and rebounded, unlike the Rockets in the first two quarters. At halftime, the Rockets were down by 10 points.
The second half of the game seemed to go much better for the Rockets. Senior Nick Berglund and junior Haydon Meier came out of the locker room fired up and ready to put in shots. And that they did. Meier and Berglund each put in three field goals in the third quarter and Meier also put in one of two free throws.
Another key player for the Rockets was Meier's younger brother, Bennett Meier. Although B. Meier didn't add any points for the Rockets, he excelled under the basket rebounding shot after shot, which helped the Rockets immensely.
With the Rockets finally on top of their A-game, they were able to add up a total of 25 points in the third quarter, only trailing the Miners by a measly point.
With accidental fouls by Berglund and H. Meier, players for the Miners were sent to the line to put in 4-of-7 free throws. With only a few minutes left on the clock, H. Meier was able to steal the ball from the Miners and breakaway for the basket. Mid-shot, Cael Hilzendiger of the Miners received an intentional foul, which sent H. Meier to the line to put in two free throws. The Rockets also received the ball back.
The intentional foul just wasn't enough to slow the Miners. The Rockets attempted to get the ball back by using fouls, but the Miners were able to hit their free throws.
The Miners defeated the Rockets 58-51, leaving the Rockets sitting 2-7 overall.
The b-squad team also took a loss to the Miners, losing 55-69. Eighth grader Easton Simon led the Rockets with 19 total points. As for the Miners, Hunter Wolff and Bradon Wallace were top scorers. Wolff had scored 19 total points and Wallace scored 15.
The Rockets c-squad team came out victorious, defeating the Miners 60-25. Simon, Kendrick Hopfauf, Easton Benz and Brody Weisenburger all scored in double digits for the Rockets. Simon led with 13 points, and B. Weisenburger, Hopfauf and Benz followed with 12 each.
