Rockets take District 7 loss to Benson County Wildcats

The New Rockford-Sheyenne girls' basketball team traveled to Leeds on Friday, Jan. 21 to take on the Benson County Wildcats. The Rockets fell short, losing 47-55.

Benson County senior Quinn Neppl was unstoppable. Just in the first quarter, she drained two 3-pointers, one field goal, and 3-of-4 free throws. Neppl slowed down in the second and third quarters, but that gave Ashlyn Williams and Hailey Maddock the opportunity to put up some points. Williams put in two three-pointers in the second quarter, and one in the third quarter along with a three-pointer from Maddock in the third.

NR-S senior Mya Cudworth had one of her best games this season. Although she started off the first three quarters with only six points on the board, she popped off in the fourth quarter by going to work under the basket to put in five field goals. Cudworth led the Rockets in points, with a total of 16. The only other Rockets' player to score in double digits was Kelsie Belquist with 12.

With Madisen Myhre fouling out, and Belquist one foul shy of fouling out, the Rockets had to take precautions in the fourth quarter. Neppl came back in the fourth with three field goals, one three-pointer and three free throws. Neppl was the only Wildcats' player to score in double digits with a total of 27 points. Neppl scored half of the total points for the Wildcats.

After this loss, the Rockets sit 0-2 in the District, 3-2 in the Region and 6-5 overall. Benson County is now 3-1 in the District, 4-2 in the Region and 9-5 overall.

The junior varsity and junior high teams also took tough losses to the Wildcats. The junior varsity team lost 25-58. Top scorers for the Rockets' junior varsity team were Addysen Fandrich with six, and Bailey Jacobson and Ava Peterson each with four.
