Rockets' endure tough 3-game stretch

The boys' basketball season is rapidly approaching an end, and New Rockford-Sheyenne has faced a rough triad of games down the stretch.

The three-game stretch began with a thrilling match versus the Rolette Comets on Thursday, Feb. 10. The Rockets' began the matchup well, and NR-S senior Nick Berglund wasted no time establishing his dominance.

In combination with impressive baskets from Bennett Meier and DJ Mudgett, Berglund was able to lift NR-S to the lead after one quarter. The Comets, however, were hanging tough, just one point behind entering the second quarter.

Leading the way for Rolette was Montgomery Grant, who was simply sublime from beyond the arc. Grant was nearly responsible for all of his team's points in the first quarter, and did score all of his team's second-quarter points.

But while Grant was dominant, the rest of his team fell silent, allowing NR-S to pull a strong fourth-quarter lead. It wasn't strong enough, however, as the Rockets' offense soon fell silent as well. When the Rockets' best offensive weapon, Berglund, left the game with blood dripping from his forehead, they were powerless to stop what came next.

Grant once again stepped up to the 3-point line and didn't miss, propelling his team to a narrow 46-44 comeback victory. Grant sank seven 3-pointers for 21 points before all was said and done.

Up next for NR-S were the Benson County Wildcats, who were winless entering their matchup with the Rockets on Saturday, Feb. 12.

NR-S has struggled in the first quarter this season, but no such struggle existed versus the winless Wildcats. The Rockets scored 20 first-quarter points and another 14 in the second, entering halftime with a suffocating 18-point lead.

The Rockets' had recently blown an impressive lead just two days earlier, but the second half on Saturday was largely a formality. NR-S head coach Tyler Cook began resting his starters shortly after the fourth quarter began, and even then, the Rockets' extended their lead.

NR-S walked away from that matchup with a 65-26 victory, but it would be their only win during this stretch.

Up next was Dakota Prairie Knights in McVille on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Once again the Rockets avoided a first quarter slump, but that wasn't enough to stop Dakota Prairie from running up an early lead. Three players for the Knights, Caden Joramo, Cade Stein and Garrett Syverson, immediately made their presence known.

The three combined for all but three of their teams' 35 first-half points. The Rockets, meanwhile, were just about managing to keep pace, as Berglund and Haydon Meier scored the majority of their teams 25 first-half points.

The Rockets' couldn't keep pace for long, however, as Berglund's shots were no longer hitting their target. Haydon Meier and freshman Porter Granger attempted to pick up the slack, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback.

NR-S eventually lost to Dakota Prairie by a score of 58-47, bringing their overall record to 4-12 and 2-4 in District 7. Junior varsity, meanwhile, took two of their three most recent games, and continue to dominate the majority of their opponents.

Following their final two games of the regular season, NR-S will travel to Devils Lake to compete in the District 7 tournament on February 25, 26 and 28.
