4-H Shooting Sports Update: April 18, 2022

On Wednesday, April 6, the Eddy-County 4-H Shooting Sports Club had a meeting.

The first order of business was the treasurer’s report. After that, we received forms for the new shirt designs for this year. Our lesson topic was on packing for a backpacking trip.

We learned that some of the necessities for packing are toilet paper, fire starter, first aid kit, twine or paracord, a good sleeping bag and a tent, with some sort of water purification.

We also learned how much to pack: approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of our body weight. Most importantly, we learned the four ways to get water in the wild. The easiest and best way to get water is straight out of a mountain. This is called spring water, and is the most pure water in the world. The next way, the most well-known way to purify water, is using a purifying system. The next best way is to boil water. The final way to safely and effectively purify water is to use iodine tablets. Seeing as humans need nearly a gallon of water a day, it is important to be drinking clean water.
