On Tuesday, April 26, the SNR Black Sox traveled to LaMoure for a briefer-than-expected double header versus the Kidder Co./Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter Wolves and LaMoure-Litchville/Marion Loboes.
Up first were the Wolves, who pounced on SNR’s starting pitcher, Nick Berglund, and took advantage of sloppy defense in the first three innings.
The Wolves scored six runs in the first inning alone, and continued imposing their will in the second and third innings. The Wolves’ Jace Larson was particularly potent at the plate, going 2-for-3, knocking in three runs, and crossing the plate for two more.
The Black Sox, meanwhile, were struggling on both offense and defense.
Defensively they committed three errors, which contributed to four of the Wolves’ 10 runs.
On offense, baserunners were hard to come by, and those that did manage to get on base were left there, never able to cross home plate.
Following the first three innings, the score was 10-0, and after SNR failed to score runs in either the fourth or fifth, a 10-run mercy rule took effect and the game was ended after just 4.5 innings.
The Black Sox attempted to rebound later that evening against the Loboes, but ultimately suffered an eerily similar fate.
Once again, SNR’s opponent pounced early, this time scoring five runs in the first inning, and yet again, Black Sox errors were largely to blame.
SNR’s five errors were responsible for three of the Loboes’ 10 runs, and the Loboes’ offense had a field day at the plate, racking up 10 runs over five innings, five walks and four RBI’s.
The Loboes’ Corban Potts, Anthony Hanson and Jacob Nitschke accounted for much of their teams’ offense, and both Hanson and Nitschke proved particularly effective on the mound.
In four innings of work, the Black Sox only managed three hits against Hanson, and just one off Nitschke in the fifth. SNR’s two pitchers, meanwhile, gave up at least one run in every inning.
After giving up five runs in the first, Black Sox starting pitcher Caden Price gave up one more in the second before Luke Yri took over for the third inning. The pitching change didn’t stop the Loboes from steadily building their lead, however, and after scoring twice more in the fifth, a 10-run mercy rule once again took effect, ending the game after just five innings.
The two losses in LaMoure dropped SNR’s overall record to 2-5, and extended the Black Sox’ losing streak to four games.
The Black Sox will attempt to put their latest defeats behind them on Thursday, May 5, here in New Rockford, but it won’t be easy; the game is a rematch against Kidder Co./Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter, who are now 3-2 this season as of press time.
