Belquist, Jensen state-qualify at Central Cass Quadrangular
With Mother Nature finally settling down on North Dakota's second winter, the New Rockford-Sheyenne track team was able to compete in the Central Cass Varsity Quadrangular held in Casselton.
Although it was quite breezy, the Rockets excelled at the meet. There were a total of 21 top-10 placings for New Rockford. Along with those top-10 placings, there were two Rocket athletes to state qualify: senior, Kaden Jensen, and sophomore, Kelsie Belquist.
Jensen state-qualified in the boys' long jump event, with a jump of 20'9." Jensen also competed in the triple jump, high jump and 100 meter dash. In each event, he fell just shy of state-qualifying.
Belquist on the other hand, took first place in both the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash with state-qualifying times. The Transcript recently discovered that Belquist had previously state-qualified in the 100-meter dash, 400- meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles in Hazen back on April 9. Belquist improved her time in the 400-meter dash in Casselton by 1.39 seconds.
Along with the three state-qualifiers from New Rockford-Sheyenne, there were many from Central Cass, Harvey/Wells County and Thompson. Let's start with the girls. Decontee Smith, Elise Wisnewski, Mayzee Jacobson, Olivia Siverson, Izzy Thompson, and Grace Lemar, all of Central Cass, state-qualified. Wisnewski qualified for state in the 200-meter dash and the 4x200-meter relay, along with teammates; Jacobson, Lemar and Smith. Along with state-qualifying in the 4x200-meter relay, Smith also state-qualified in the 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay, alongside teammates; Jacobson, Siverson and Thompson.
As for the boys' side, Hornet athletes Daniel Stoll, Madden Thorson, Isaac Friese, Kayl Sieg, Alex Erickson and Garin Opdahl, qualified for state. Stoll qualified in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and the 4x100 meter relay with teammates; Friese, Sieg and Thorson. Thorson also state-qualified in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Erickson qualified in long jump and triple jump, where Opdahl also qualified. Cole Potter of Thompson qualified for state in the shot put event. Will Ellison, Frosty Wisnewski, Jake Deutsch and Isaac Wisnewski, all of Central Cass, state-qualified in the 4x100-meter relay. F. Wisnewski also qualified in the 100-meter dash.
Belquist's sister, Emmie, also did outstanding at the quadrangular. Only a seventh grader, she is following in the footsteps of her older sister. E. Belquist competed in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 300-meter hurdles and long jump. E. Belquist took fourth place in long jump, sixth in 300-meter hurdles, 10th in the 400-meter dash and 11th in the 100-meter dash.
Javelin was a new event for the Rockets at the quadrangular. A total of five Rocket athletes competed in javelin; Ava Peterson, Lucy Meier, Kennedy Demester, Trysta Thumb and Katie Allmaras. Peterson and Meier both placed in the top-10, with fifth and eighth place, respectively.
Peterson and Allmaras competed in the 4000-meter dash, to take eighth and ninth place, respectively.
Allmaras also competed in the 100-meter dash and finished in seventh place, alongside Meier who placed fifth. Meier competed in the 200-meter dash and took fifth place in that event as well.
K. Belquist, Meier, Allmaras and Demester made up the Rocket girls' relay team for the 4x200-meter relay. The Rockets placed fourth with a time of 1:57.80. For the Rockets to earn a chance at state, they need to bring their time down to 1:51.54.
Porter Granger and Easton Benz were the two other Rocket boys to place in the top-10 of an event. Granger and Benz competed alongside each other in the 400-meter dash, with Granger taking sixth place, finishing three miliseconds before Benz, who took seventh place.
The Rockets' varsity track team traveled to Belcourt on Thursday, April 28, to compete in another indoor meet, hopefully the last of the season. The Rockets' junior high tracksters traveled to Fessenden on Thursday, April 28.
Depending on weather conditions, the Rockets intend on traveling to Oakes on Monday, May 2, to compete in the Oakes Varsity track meet, with track and field events starting at 2 p.m. These track meets will be covered in the May 9 edition of the New Rockford Transcript.
