Doris Griffin attended Timely topics on Wednesday and went to the Benson County Extension Gardening Seminar in Maddock on Thursday.
Continuing Doris’ information about her geese: She has three geese sitting now. One has five eggs, one 11 and the other one hasn’t left her nest at all so Doris doesn’t know how many eggs she has. A goose usually will have 12 eggs, but her geese laid so early and the eggs would have frozen so she snatched a few. Doris has it on good authority that one goose egg makes the best three chicken omelet. Doris’s geese have been sitting about three weeks now.
The gooses’ body processes slow down while sitting and her body temperature increases. That means that she will not eat, drink, or go to the bathroom during the sitting time, except for a time or two when she will slip off the nest to grab a quick bite to eat and a quick sip of water and then hustle right back to her nest. Quite often, the male will chase her back to her nest.
When she leaves the nest, she covers it with what is handy, as well as her own feathers that she pulls out. The nest is left in a neat circle and the outer circumference of the circle shows beak marks clearly where she has tucked everything in very neatly.
That is it for this week.
