Resources for Veterans: May 9, 2022

A special 4-day vacation get-a-way for a veteran and their family, has been donated to the Veteran Service Office. This resort is located near Deadwood, S.D., and there are so many things to do while there. The famous Mount Rushmore is nearby or make a day trip to Spearfish.

This vacation will be awarded by nomination from veterans and members of the community. The nominations will be reviewed by a panel of three, consisting of a County Commissioner, Veteran Service Officer, and community member.

Candidates should be a veteran of the armed forces, all branches. Each nomination should include the Veteran’s name, branch of service and why they are deserving of this recognition. Please email the nominations to [email protected] by Monday, May 16 or you can bring them to the Veterans Service Office.

I’d like to talk about hearing loss and tinnitus. When you put in a claim, you need to establish a service connection to the ringing in your ears of loss of hearing. You will need to have a current diagnosis from your doctor. This will be submitted along with your evidence that your active duty caused or aggravated your condition. Loud noise exposure is commonly a cause of both hearing loss and tinnitus. A medical evaluator will need to connect the noise exposure you experienced while on active duty with what you are experiencing today. This document is called a nexus letter. This document will help to prove your service connection. Once a service connection for your disability has been approved, you will receive a letter stating the percentage at which your disability is rated. If you experienced head trauma or loud noise exposure while on active duty, I encourage you to call me to discuss your options.

No matter when or where you served in the military; you may be facing challenges that affect your health, relationships, and life. The VA is here to help you. There are resources to support and manage many challenges. Please come by for a confidential meeting or to find resources. I am available to meet with you on your schedule.
