Jensen, Belquist add four state-qualifying events at Oakes meet

The New Rockford-Sheyenne track and field team traveled to Oakes on Monday, May 2, to attempt to secure state-qualifications at the Starion Track & Field Complex.

Among the 24 Rockets athletes to compete, two received state-qualifications. Those athletes were NR-S senior, Kaden Jensen, and NR-S sophomore, Kelsie Belquist.

Jensen and Belquist have had an outstanding 2022 track season. Jensen has excelled in the field area mainly, with earning a state-qualification in the long jump event in Casselton back on April 26. Belquist, on the other hand, doesn't have a specific area she is greater in. Belquist received her first three state-qualifications in Hazen on April 9 in the 100-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles. Belquist then secured her fourth state-qualification at the Central Cass Quadrangular in the 200-meter dash.

Jensen added high jump to his state-qualification list in Oakes, as he surpassed the 6'2" mark. Here's a fun fact for you Transcript readers: Jensen's right leg had begun to cramp after his first attempt at 5'8", but he still managed to push through the pain to secure that sweet victory.

Bystanders were overheard saying "This guy is unpredictable ... he majorly failed at 5'8", but then the next one he cleared with no issue." One of the bystanders was competitor, Zeke Barnick, of Edgeley/Kulm. Barnick missed three attempts at 6'0", and placed second behind Jensen with a jump of 5'10". Barnick stood on the sidelines and told Jensen "...You got this, kid." And boy, was he ever right. On Jensen's third and final attempt, he cleared the bar.

On the other side of the field, Belquist was leaping with all of her might to secure state-qualifications in the long jump and triple jump events. Belquist leapt past the state-qualifying distance in triple jump by two feet and in long jump by six inches.

Belquist also outpaced her competitors in the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles, leaving them in the dust. She placed first in both events with times of 15.23 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and 43.24 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles.

The Rockets' boys team had multiple athletes place in the top-10. Those athletes were: Connor Knatterud, Easton Benz, Haydon Meier, Luke Yri, Porter Granger, Bradyn Collier and Keaton Cudworth.

Speed-demon, Connor Knatterud, busted out of the gates in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.06 seconds to secure second place. Riley Fernow of Enderlin beat him by just a hair, with a time of 12.05 seconds.

Knatterud also took part in the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. Knatterud and teammates Benz, Jensen and Meier placed second in the 4x100-meter relay. Knatterud, Benz, Yri and Collier made up the relay team for the 4x400 and placed ninth with a time of 4:03.19.

Monday was a day for relays. The Rockets 4x200 relay, made up of Yri, Granger, Collier and Cudworth, took fourth place with a time of 1:46.26. The girls' relay teams also excelled in Oakes, even with missing senior runner, Kennedy Demester. The Rockets girls' placed fifth in the 4x100 relay and seventh in the 4x400 relay.

Emmie Belquist competed alongside K. Belquist in the long jump event and placed ninth with a jump of 14'0".

NR-S sophomore, Lucy Meier, competed in the 100- meter dash and placed fifth with a time of 13.91 seconds. L. Meier was less than a second shy of state-qualifying in the 100-meter dash.

The Rockets boys' and girls' teams placed seventh and eighth overall, respectively.

The Rockets traveled to Rugby on Thursday, May 5 to compete in the Mariya Tate Memorial Meet. The Rockets also traveled just 15 minutes south on Saturday, May 7, to compete in the Carrington Kiwanis/Lions Meet.

On Tuesday, May 10, the Rockets varsity and junior high teams will travel to Fessenden to compete in the CNDC Conference Meet, with field events starting at 2 p.m. with running events to follow at 3:30 p.m. These three meets will be covered in the May 16 edition of the New Rockford Transcript.
