Belquist sets CNDC Outdoor records

Mother Nature strikes yet again. The New Rockford-Sheyenne varsity and junior high teams were scheduled to attend the 2022 CNDC Outdoor in Fessenden on Tuesday, May 10. But after a few inches of rain fell the night before, the CNDC Outdoor meet had to be relocated to the Geographical Center of North America, also known as Rugby.

This slight change didn't affect any of the Rocket athletes though. Multiple NR-S varsity and junior high athletes either placed in the top 10 of their event or set their personal record.

Let's switch it up and start off with the girls' team.

First place finisher for the girls' team was, yeah, you guessed it, Kelsie Belquist. K. Belquist overtook everyone in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles. K. Belquist even set her personal records in the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles.

K. Belquist also surpassed 100-meter hurdle record holder, Kimmer Keller of Harvey. Keller has held the record since 1999, when she completed the event in 15.25 seconds. K. Belquist completed the 100-meter hurdles in 15.06 seconds. K. Belquist also beat her previous meet record in the 200-meter dash, which was set at the 2021 CNDC Outdoor. K. Belquist completed the 200-meter dash in 25.61 seconds, beating her previous meet record by 17 milliseconds.

K. Belquist also ran the second leg of the 4x200-meter relay race; along with Lucy Meier, Emmie Belquist and Katie Allmaras. The girls' relay team placed second with a time of 1:52.28. Runners had the wind against them, which caused them to fall less than a second shy of state-qualifying.

NR-S senior, Kennedy Demester, had an exemplary day in the javelin event. Demester threw the javelin a total of 93'1", setting her personal record and taking third place overall. Ava Peterson, K. Allmaras and Meier also competed in javelin, taking seventh, eighth and 10th, respectively. K. Allmaras and Meier each threw their personal best, with K. Allmaras throwing 84'8" and Meier throwing 76'2".

E. Belquist took third place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.56 seconds and Peterson followed behind in seventh with a time of 56.82 seconds. A new face to the 300-meter hurdles was NR-S freshman, Kaiya O'Connor. Although Ka. O'Connor had little practice with the hurdles, she did fairly well, and placed 10th overall with a time of 1:03.97. With a little more practice and less nerves, Ka. O'Connor could possibly be seen placing up by E. Belquist and Peterson in no time.

Meier, E. Belquist and K. Allmaras competed in the 100-meter dash, and placed fourth, eighth and ninth place, respectively. All three athletes set personal records in this event.

Meier also competed in the 400-meter dash for the girls and placed ninth, along with setting a personal record of 1:07.93.

Long jumpers for the girls' team were E. Belquist and Ka. O'Connor. E. Belquist placed fifth overall with a personal best of 15'3". Ka. O'Connor didn't place in the top ten, but set her personal record by jumping 13'2".

On the girls' junior high end, Paige Knatterud placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a personal record of 1:14.34. P. Knatterud also competed in the 4x100-meter relay race, along with Kaelyn Ystaas, Alivia Yri and Karsyn Wetzel. The girls' 4x100 team placed fifth with a time of 1:00.96.

The Rockets varsity girls' finished in fifth place with a total of 65 points, whereas the Rockets' junior high girls' placed eighth with a total of nine points.

Now, let's move on to the Rockets' boys.

Senior, Kaden Jensen, yet again excelled in high jump, long jump, the 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay. Jensen placed first in high jump and second in long jump and the 100-meter dash. Jensen also set personal records in the 100-meter dash and long jump. Jensen competed alongside Porter Granger, Easton Benz and Connor Knatterud in the 4x100-meter relay. The boys' relay team finished in second place with a time of 46.63, also less than a second away from state-qualifying.

C. Knatterud and Easton Benz also competed with Jensen in the first heat of the 100-meter dash. C. Knatterud finished in fourth place, setting a personal record of 11.86. Benz placed sixth overall, also setting a personal record of 12.11.

C. Knatterud also ran in the 4x200-meter relay alongside Lucas Yri, Bradyn Collier and Keaton Cudworth. The boys' 4x200 relay team placed fifth with a time of 1:44.44.

Granger competed in high jump, long jump and the 200-meter dash; he placed third in high jump, ninth in long jump and 10th in the 200-meter dash.

The Rockets junior high boys' also did very well at the CNDC Outdoor.

Malaki Kukowski and Thomas Allmaras raced alongside each other in the 200-meter hurdles. Kukowski placed third, and set a personal record of 33.61 seconds. T. Allmaras also set his personal record for the event with a time of 34.83 seconds and placed fourth.

Kukowski, T. Allmaras, Kolton O'Connor and Vincent Ruppell made up the junior high 4x100-meter relay team. The boys' placed third with a time of 56.27.

Ruppell also competed in the 100-meter dash, the 800-meter run and long jump; he took fourth place in both the 100-meter dash and the 800-meter run, and ninth in long jump. He also set his personal record in the 800-meter.

Ko. O'Connor was the lone thrower for the junior high boys. He placed sixth with a throw of 28'0", which also sets his personal record.

T. Allmaras placed seventh in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, with a time of 13.64 seconds in the 100-meter and 30.27 seconds in the 200-meter. T. Allmaras also set his personal record in the 100-meter dash.

The boys' varsity team tied with Velva-Drake/Anamoose for fifth place, with a total of 56 points. The boys' junior high team placed eighth with 34 points.
