Tough losses for Black Sox in Rugby

On Saturday, May 7, the Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox traveled to Rugby for a double header with the Rugby Panthers and Velva-Drake/Anamoose Aggies.

Up first were the Panthers, who entered Saturday’s double header undefeated, having dominated recent competition.

The Black Sox, however, put up a strong fight.

SNR starting pitcher Koby Duda started out strong, but allowed two runs in the third and another in the fourth. But the Black Sox offense kept pace, scoring three runs in the third to keep the game tied for much of the afternoon.

The Black Sox defense was also playing well, getting necessary outs and not committing a single error. The Panthers, however, were also finding success, leaving the Black Sox unable to build a lead after their breakout third inning.

SNR attempted to force the game to extra innings in the bottom of the seventh, but the Panthers had no interest in staying late. All they needed was one run to secure the walk-off victory and that’s exactly what they got, ending the game at 4-3 in the Panthers’ favor.

Up next were the Aggies of Velva-Drake/Anamoose.Unlike their first game of the day, the Black Sox put together a sloppy showing against the Aggies.

The Black Sox defense, which had 0 errors in the first game, finished their second game with five. Of the Aggies’ 13 runs, only six were earned.

The Black Sox offense, meanwhile, only managed a pair of runs from the second and third innings. It was hardly enough to avoid the 10-run mercy rule, which took effect when the Aggies scored their final two runs in the sixth inning, ending the game at 13-2.

The losses brought their overall record to 2-8.

They headed to Steele on Friday for a rematch with LaMoure-Litchville/Marion, and against the Carrington Cardinals on Saturday. Those games will be covered in the May 23 edition.
