Rockets soar at Lloyd Memorial Meet

The New Rockford-Sheyenne varsity and junior high tracksters battled the wind on Saturday, May 14 in Fessenden at the Lloyd Memorial Meet.

The wind kept most athletes from finishing their events in state-qualifying times. But wind didn't seem to slow down NR-S track star, Kelsie Belquist. Although Belquist has state-qualified in eight events alone, she continues to better her times second by second.

Belquist competed in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 4x200-meter relay. Belquist took first place in both the 100 and the 200, with state-qualifying times. Belquist and her younger sister, Emmie, Katie Allmaras and Lucy Meier made up the girls' 4x200-meter relay team. The girls placed fourth in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:53.94.

Other first place finishes for the Rockets came from Kaci Weisenburger, Vincent Ruppell, Easton Simon, Thomas Allmaras and Kaden Jensen.

K. Weisenburger was the lone junior high girl to compete in the long jump event; she jumped a total of 10'6". K. Weisenburger also competed in the girls' 4x100-meter relay alongside Alivia Yri, Karsyn Wetzel and Paige Knatterud, where they finished in second place with a time of 1:01.94.

Ruppell competed in the 800-meter run, the 100-meter dash, the 4x100-meter relay and long jump. Ruppell placed first in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:49.94. Ruppell took second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.24 seconds. Ruppell, along with T. Allmaras, Malaki Kukowski and Sawyer Huso, made up the boys 4x100-meter relay team, and finished in second place with a time of 56.54 seconds. Ruppell placed fourth in long jump with a jump of 13'9.5".

Sprinting events were Simon's piece of cake in Fessenden. Simon placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.34, second in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.84 seconds.

Along with taking second in the 4x100-meter relay, T. Allmaras placed first in the 200-meter dash and fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.64 seconds.

Jensen competed in his usual 100-meter dash and high jump, but was also seen competing in both the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x200-meter relay. Jensen finished in first place with a jump of 5'8" in high jump and placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.54 seconds. Porter Granger, Easton Benz, Connor Knatterud and Jensen made up both varsity boys' relay teams; the boys' placed second in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 46.74 seconds and third in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:39.94.

Many Rockets' placed in the top-10 of their events.

Wetzel and A. Yri finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, in both the junior high girls' 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Meier placed fifth in the varsity girls 100-meter dash with a time of 13.64 seconds. E. Belquist brought home eighth place in long jump and ninth place in the 400-meter dash.

Ava Peterson and Kennedy Demester were top throwers for the Rockets girls'. Peterson finished in fourth place with a throw of 87'6" and Demester finished in 10th place with a throw of 73'7".

With minimal junior high athletes competing at the Lloyd Memorial Meet, NR-S tracksters were able to bring home many, yes many, top-10 placings. Since we've touched base on all of the junior high girls and a few of the junior high boys, let's talk about the rest of the junior high boys.

Kukowski took second place in the junior high boys' long jump event with a jump of 14'9.5". Kukowski also brought home third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.34 seconds and third place in the 200-meter dash.

Kolton O'Connor took fourth place in both shot put and discus events, with a throw of 26'6" in shot and 45'11" in discus. Ko. O'Connor also competed in the 100-meter dash and placed ninth with a time of 15.74 seconds.

Huso competed in both long jump and the 100-meter dash. He placed sixth in long jump with a jump of 12'3" and placed seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.94 seconds.

Varsity boys' top-10 placings came from Benz, Granger, C. Knatterud, Bradyn Collier and DJ Mudgett.

Granger, Benz and Mudgett were top placers in field events. Granger placed fourth in long jump with a jump of 18'2.5". Benz competed in triple jump and finished in second place with a leap of 36'10". Mudgett took 10th place in both shot put and discus events, with a throw of 33'4" in shot put and a throw of 98'0" in discus.
