On Thursday, June 16, New Rockford Post #30 took on Nelson County Post #162 in Legion baseball, and delivered their strongest performance yet this season.
Thursday's game was a low-scoring affair between New Rockford and Nelson County, as the pitchers on both teams efficiently worked through their opposing teams' lineup.
Starting for Post #162 was Cole Hendrickson, whose only difficult inning came in the first, when he and an error from the Owls' defense allowed two Black Sox runners to cross home plate.
Despite that inning, Hendrickson went on pitch for another five innings while giving up just four hits and one earned run.
However, those two runs proved costly, as the pitching from New Rockford Post #30 was even more efficient.
Alex Harrison started on the mound for the Black Sox, putting in 4.1 innings of work while allowing just two hits and striking out six batters. Afterwards, Keaton Cudworth stepped in for the final 2.2 innings and also pitched well, giving up just one hit and allowing zero runs.
Even more impressive, perhaps, was the Black Sox' defense, who stopped every ball that flew their way and avoided costly mistakes. For the first time this season, they didn't commit a single error on defense.
The result was a nearly flawless 2-1 victory for New Rockford Post #30, briefly bringing their overall record to 2-2.
Their next matchup against Kidder County on Tuesday, June 21, was also low-scoring and featured excellent pitching, but not so mistake-free for the Black Sox.
Kidder County managed to escape with a slim 3-2 victory, sinking Post #30's overall record to 2-3.
