The New Rockford Post #30 Black Sox Traveled to Tolna on Friday, June 29, to take on Nelson County, and for most of the game, the Black Sox seemed poised to return home with another victory.
Post #30 jumped on offense immediately as Friday’s game got underway, scoring two runs in the first inning and again in the third.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Caden Price was pitching a gem. After giving up one run in the first, he kept Nelson County from scoring at all in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
With Price pitching well early, his team took advantage by opening a strong lead, scoring five more runs in the top of the fifth.
Price was also responsible for much of their scoring on offense, earning three hits and three RBI’s, which matched Koby Duda’s three hits and three RBI’s. Between them, the two were accountable for 80 percent of their teams’ points.
Entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Post #30 enjoyed a comfortable 9-1 advantage.
However, less than two innings later, the score would be tied.
In the bottom of the sixth, Nelson County managed to get two runners across the plate, before a complete defensive meltdown allowed them to score another seven in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying the game and sending it to extra innings.
Post #30 was unable to rebound on offense in the eighth, and once again allowed Nelson County to find home plate in the bottom of the inning. When the dust had finally settled, Nelson County found themselves with an 11-10 lead, having completed a massive comeback in extra innings.
The result was a crushing blow for Post #30, who were on the verge of their fourth win this season. Instead, the loss brought their overall record to 3-6.
New Rockford attempted to rebound versus the Jamestown Hawks on Thursday, June 7 - a team they defeated at the Mid-Summer Classic, 14-4. That game will be covered in the July 18 edition of the Transcript.
