Doris Griffin reports that July 5 was the first chick hatch of the year. A Banty hen came out of a feed bucket with five little ones. All are doing fine so far. There are four more Banty hens scattered in different hiding places in the barn sitting on eggs. One is hatching today (Sunday) but no sightings yet. Momma hen has moved two empty half-shells out of her way. The barn sparrows are also hatching little ones now so the chickens are not the only ones confused by the weather or seasons.
The other day when it rained, Doris had an inch of rain showing in one rain gauge and a half inch in another, so which one do you believe? It must mean she got an inch and a half of rain. Ha Ha.
Turkey still shows up most days and when he fans his feathers, he is really quite majestic and handsome.
The garden seems to be slow or is Doris being impatient? She found the first little cucumber of the year, beans are making blossoms and quite a few tomatoes are beginning to show up. The zucchini are starting and the beets are up, but the wind has been hard on the leaves. A few carrots decided to germinate, and the potatoes are getting big and have to hope there will be nice potatoes underneath. The strawberries are producing and some of the juneberries are turning red. Nothing ripe yet, but the birds are anxious.
