The New Rockford Black Sox will enter the regional Babe Ruth tournament on a high, having defeated Devils Lake 4-3 on Monday, July 11.
It wasn't a district matchup and it only lasted five-innings, but it was reminiscent of many of this season's games, as it showed once again that when it matters most, New Rockford has what it takes to close out a win.
As they so often do, the Sox started well, scoring two runs in the first inning and another in the second.
Connor Knatterud has been one of the Black Sox' best players all season long, and he proved it once again Monday afternoon as he got on base and scored all three times he stepped to the plate.
Scoring the other point for New Rockford was Alex Weisenburger, who's also been a big contributor for his team lately, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
On the mound, meanwhile, Jackson Schumacher was efficiently working his way through the lineup, until inning No. 4, that is, when Devils Lake rattled off three runs to tie the game.
New Rockford responded at once, immediately scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth to regain a slim advantage, and thankfully for the Sox, a slim advantage is all that's needed when good pitching is on your side.
Thomas Allmaras stepped on the mound in the fourth inning to close out the game for New Rockford, and didn't allow a single run as he struck out two en route to another victory.
The victory follows their 2-7 loss in Grafton a few days earlier, but neither were against district opponents and therefore did not impact their seeding for the regional tournament.
The Black Sox will begin the regional tournament on July 13 as the No. 2 seed. The Sox opened the tournament in New Rockford, before traveling to Hillsboro for the remainder of their matchups.
