History of New Rockford: Oct. 17, 2022

On June 7, 1905, Dr. and Mrs. G.D. Murphy went to Minneapolis for a short visit; he returned on June 10, while she remained until June 23.

On June 7 and 8, George M. Pike attended a Shriners’ meeting in Fargo. From June 7 to 12, jeweler J.N. Kunkel’s father of Fessenden visited him and his family.

On the morning of June 8, a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Hans Tuffli southwest of town. Paul Hartman came in on business from eastern Wells County, as did Peter Berge from northwest of town. J.F. Grandstaff, B.W. Hersey, and A.E. Hersey were in from Tiffany on business. Fred Lahue was in on business for the first time in two months. Charles Richter came in on business. Miss Hattie Davidson came home from Hamline University to spend the summer with her parents. Railroad mail clerk E.G. Allison came up from Jamestown to see his parents. Druggist Orley Couch’s mother of Bismarck came in for a visit; she had just been a delegate to the Rebekah Grand Lodge in Minot. James T. Wiltsie was up from Carrington to help his family get settled in their new home. Principal Robert T. and Mrs. Muir left to visit relatives in Cando until they decided on their future plans. There was “a good shower” that day.

On June 8, the spring term of the Academy ended and a commencement address “Aims in Life” was given by trustee Rev. Charles H. Phillips of Jamestown, for whom the institution was named. [There were no actual graduates.]

On June 8, the term of the District Court ended. Some of the cases were Brownell vs. Riley, foreclosure of mechanics lien; judgment for plaintiff; Maddux & Rinker for plaintiff; James A. Manly for defendant.

H. Peoples & Co. vs. Carrie E. Fay, foreclosure of mechanics lien; judgment for plaintiff; Maddux & Rinker for plaintiff; Peter M. Mattson for defendant.

M.F. Kepner vs. A.J. Ford, action for damages, $2,000; verdict for plaintiff for $2,000 and interest and costs; Maddux & Rinker for plaintiff; F. Baldwin of Jamestown and R.P. Allison of New Rockford for the defense.

Miller vs. Northern Pacific Railway, action for damages; verdict for defendant; S.E. Ellsworth of Jamestown for plaintiff; D.G. Maclay of Ball, Watson and Maclay of Fargo and Maddux for defendant.

Vannie Hall vs. Northern Pacific Railway, action for damages; verdict for defendant; S.L. Glaspell of Jamestown for plaintiff; D.G. Maclay of Ball, Watson and Maclay of Fargo and Maddux for defendant.

Norris vs. Dodds, action on note; judgment by default for plaintiff; Manly for plaintiff; Maddux & Rinker for defendant, answer and appearance of defendant withdrawn.

Chamberlain vs. Powell, money demand; judgment for plaintiff; Maddux & Rinker for plaintiff; Manly for defendant, answer and appearance of defendant withdrawn.

Sorter vs. Prior, action in reflevin [an action to recover property wrongfully taken] for grain, machinery, and livestock on claim of $675; verdict for defendant; Manly for plaintiff; Maddux & Rinker for defendant.

Starks vs. Baird & Crossen, money demand; tried to the court by agreement; plaintiff given ten days to submit brief; R.P. Allison for plaintiff; Maddux & Rinker for defendant.

The June 9, 1905, “Transcript” said that during the week cashier E.S. Severtson had a force of men move his house from Stimson Avenue West due north to Gregory Avenue; Severtson was going to have a new house built on the newly vacated lots.

There was a long article from Jack Powers disagreeing with Prof. L.J. Aldrich’s attack on Sunday baseball in the June 2 “Transcript.”

E.M. Stitzel and his son, Walter, were in Fargo, as was grain buyer J.C. Smith.

F.C. Davies’ crew of men had laid the cement for a sidewalk along Chicago Street from John Weimals bakery south to the J.M. Mulvey Hardware.

The previous week, P.J. Butler left for a visit to the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, to see his brother, and to find a suitable place on the West Coast to live.

On June 9, Mrs. E.R. Davidson came in from Bismarck for a lengthy visit. Miss Ruth Reutenik returned from several days of nursing in Carrington. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Dinnetz, Rudolph Indergaard, H.B. Johnson, and S.O. Lee came back from Fargo, where they had attended the Norwegian celebration. B.W. Rantz went to Jamestown, met Mrs. Rantz who arrived from St. Paul the next morning, and they returned to New Rockford.

On June 10, Miss Sarah West returned from a visit with friends and relatives at Rogers, N.D. O.B. Stedman was down from Sheyenne. Andrew Johnson, Sr., came in on business from Tiffany, accompanied by his daughter Miss Hilda. At 3 p.m., the Methodist Ladies’ Aid held a strawberry festival in the downtown park.

On Sunday, June 11, the Tiffany team came to town and defeated a pick-up nine at the ballfield west of town, 5-1. Dr. C.J. McNamara, O.B. Tausen, and John Algeo were up from Barlow, and George Tabraham, M.C. Hammond, and W.F. Steinweg came up from Carrington to visit.

The Eddy County Commission (Dailey, Dafoe, Gunvaldson) met on June 12. They appointed M.G. Steensby road supervisor in District 15 and Frank Waldo road supervisor in District 16. They voted to pay the following bills: $3.20, New Rockford Light and Water Improvement Co., lights for May; $80, John Collins, janitor, April and May; $45, Mrs. A.G. Gardner, clerk, register of deeds’ office, May; $11.70, H. Peoples & Co., clothing for Mrs. Fred Laasch by order of the insanity board.

On June 12, Walter Schmid came down from Sheyenne to join the group going to the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition. After returning from his winter in Wisconsin, Charles Hensel was in town visiting. Otto Forey was down from Minot to visit. Mrs. J.R. Beebe and her mother Mrs. Anna Dodge left to visit in Aberdeen, S.D. Rev. F.L. Gehrs of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church left to visit in Chicago. Miss Lynn Tyler departed for a visit to her home in Rushford, Minn.; she returned on June 30. Also going to his old home in Rushford to visit was attorney John A. Layne, who would also visit other Minnesota towns; he returned on July 29. Mrs. James E. Hyde left for a visit in Fargo and the Twin Cities. Miss Olive Saunders of Oberon would fill in as the assistant cashier of the First National Bank during her absence; she returned to Oberon on July 31. H.L. Rood received his commission as a deputy game warden.

On June 13, Bryant Taylor and his sister Miss Katherine came in from southeast of town to visit Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Buck for a few days. Mrs. J.N. Kunkel took her son Paul to St. Paul for the treatment of his spine. Alva Tomlinson and his son went to Minneapolis. H.J. Mitchell and R.R. Woodward went to Devils Lake on a business trip; they also looked over their property on the Chautauqua grounds. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Garvin and Miss Cora left for the Lewis & Clark Exposition in Portland. Druggist Orley Couch’s mother and her sons returned to Bismarck.
