On Thursday, Oct. 6, nearly 50 youth concluded the three-day New Rockford Dance Camp with a recital at the Brown Memorial The camp was organized by Amanda Hegland, Executive Director of New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation (NRABC) with a grant from Arts Midwest. The NRABC was one of 120 organizations across the midwest to receive the $2,500 awards.
Each group learned different age-appropriate skills and techniques.The youngest group focused on basic movement and listening. The 5-6 age group were shown the basics of ballet. The older students learned are choreography, modern and jazz dance. Their choreographed dance was a mix of modern dance with the choreography meant to tell a story.
The instructor, Taryn Johnson, has been teaching since 2000, and has worked with all ages and levels of creative movement, ballet, jazz, modern and hip hop. She has spent the last four years as a dance specialist in a Portland elementary school.
