Commissioner Rud says farewell after 16 years

The Eddy County Commission’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 1, was the last for long-time commissioner Neal Rud.

Rud was first elected to the commission in 2006, and he told his fellow commissioners on Tuesday how much he’s enjoyed serving Eddy County, but that it’s time he moves on after 16 years.

“I’m the old man on the commission, though I don’t look it,” he said in jest, sparking laughter from those in attendance. “It’s been great, and I’ve enjoyed the employees, … but 16 years is long enough.”

Having served four full terms, Rud is the most experienced voice on the commission, and on Tuesday, his fellow commissioners heaped praise on him and his many accomplishments.

Commissioner Dave Gehrtz, said, “Your experience has been a great asset to the board. Also to me with learning what’s going on. You don’t just come into the commission and know what’s going on right away.”

“I’ve learned a lot from you Neal,” added Chairperson Glenda Collier, who was first elected in 2010. “I really appreciate coming in under you.”

Everyone in attendance also acknowledged the friendly and good working relationship of the board, which Rud has helped maintain over the years.

“I’ve worked on a lot of boards and I honestly haven’t seen one where all of the members get along so well and work so efficiently and cohesively together,” said Eddy County State’s Attorney Ashley Lies.

“That’s the key,” responded Rud, “because there’s only three people on this board … you just gotta get along.”

Rud’s successor will be elected on Nov. 8 in the midterm elections, and his first meeting will be the board’s regular commission meeting in December.

However, before Rud can finally step away from his duties as commissioner, there’s at least one more meeting he’ll have to attend.

On Monday, Nov. 7, the Sheyenne City Council is asking county commissioners and Sheriff Paul Lies to attend their November meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. in Ostby Hall.

The next regular county commission meeting is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 12 at 8:30 a.m.
