Jackson Schumacher, a freshman at New Rockford-Sheyenne, was selected to attend the North Dakota Youth Leadership Institute at Minot State University (MSU) this fall.
The N.D. Youth Leadership Institute is a program operated through Strengthen ND's Launching Leadership Program in partnership with MSU and the N.D. Department of Commerce.
The program ran from Wednesday, Oct. 19 through Saturday, Oct. 22, and participants were introduced to local communities, businesses, organizations and local leaders.
"Our hope is to provide a platform for young people to learn how to become leaders and make positive changes within the communities they live," states Strengthen ND on their website.
According to the program's overview, participants learned essential leadership pillars and developed a list of the local/regional issues they care about from their own community.
Schumacher applied to attend the event, and was chosen by a committee of community representatives and program partners.
Schumacher said the experience was worthwhile and that he enjoyed meeting new people with great ideas. The event has also inspired him to give back to his community.
"One thing I realized is that there are many ways I can be a leader and there are many ways I can give back to my community," he said. "I am working on implementing Youth Sports Camps for the NR-S area. I hope to partner with the Park Director and begin this winter with a learn to skate program."
