Girls open with a win

And just like that, basketball season is back.

The New Rockford-Sheyenne varsity and junior varsity teams traveled southwest to Napoleon to take on the Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter Imperials in their season opener.

The junior varsity team started off the night, falling short 22-34. Lead scorers for the game were Lora Wobbema and Emmie Belquist, each with six points.

The varsity game, however, was the complete opposite turnout.

The Rockets came out ready to play. NR-S freshman, Ava Peterson, scored three field goals in the first quarter, and the Rockets led the Imperials 16-5 at the end of one.

Kaiya O'Connor popped out in the second quarter, swishing the only two three-pointers for the Rockets. The Rockets upheld an 8-point lead over the Imperials at the end of the first half.

The Imperials tried to catch up to the Rockets in the second half of the game. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Imperials got within two points of the Rockets. Imperial senior Tanecia Kleppe fouled out in the last minute of the game, and the Rockets defeated the Imperials by a mere eight points, 53-45. The Rockets and Imperials each scored a total of 23 points in the second half.

Peterson led the Rockets in points with a total of 18. O'Connor followed closely behind with 16 points.

The Rockets competed in the annual CNDC Tournament in Harvey Dec. 1-3. This tournament will be covered in the Dec. 12 edition.

After each game, photos will be uploaded to transcript.smugmug.com, which will be available for purchase. We have heard many great comments from fans and parents throughout the football and volleyball seasons, so we hope our basketball photos are just as great!
