Trace Hoggarth finishes up a pin over the Burros' Carson Kozojed at 126 pounds in the Cards' 42-30 dual victory over Hillsboro/Central Valley last Tuesday in the East Gym.
Dru Carr is recognized as the match winner over Oakes' Weston Sorum at 120 pounds. Carr would get pins in both the Oakes and HCV duals.
Corbin Clifton takes Oakes wrestler Case Awender to the ground on a throw at 145 pounds. Clifton earned a 12-4 major decision win in the match.
Carrington's boys wrestling team started off the dual portion of their 2022-23 schedule at Tornado Alley in Oakes Tuesday evening, November 22.
When the last matches were in the books, the Tornadoes came out on top, 46-25, thanks to the home squad taking the last five matches with three pins, a forfeit and a decision.
The Cards kept the dual close in the lower to middle weights, and earned pins from Dru Carr (120 pounds), defending state champion Trace Hoggarth (126) and Kael Kovar (160) for 18 of their team points.
Also earning a major decision win was Corbin Clifton, 12-4, at 145, and Skye Kramlich took a 10-5 win in his 106-pound match.
Carrington would also spot Oakes 12 points in defeat, with forfeits at 152 and 285 (heavyweight).
Last Tuesday, the Cards hosted their first home wrestling match of the season when Region 2 rival Hillsboro/Central Valley came to the East Gym.
This time, the CHS mat team came out with a few key pins to finish with a 42-30 win over the Burros.
Coach Josh Kerbaugh's team got out to a fast start with the first 21 points following an opening forfeit, a close 5-4 win by Kolby Zink at 113, and pins by Carr and Hoggarth.
HCV stormed back with three straight falls of their own from 132 to 145 pounds.
Kovar extended the CHS lead to 30-18 with a hard-fought 4-0 shutout, but the Burros made things interesting with two more pins to tie the dual at 30 all going into the all-important 220-pound match.
Needing a win to clinch the dual outright, the Cards' Callen Garber came up big with a second-period pin to put the score out of reach, with a 285-pound forfeit win for Kirby Freeman forthcoming. Jacob Hinrichs also took a forfeit at 160.
The Burros had one girl available to wrestle that evening on their roster (out of three total), and that gave several of the CHS girls team members valuable mat experience in exhibition bouts.
In those matches, both Mercedes Lura and Kylie Skadberg took pins over the Burro wrestler, Crystal Magnuson.
The Cardinal boys competed in the Velva Tournament this past Friday and Saturday, while the girls were in Jamestown for their own tournament on Saturday. Results from those events will be published in the December 12 edition of the Independent.
Both the CHS boys and girls will roll out the red carpet to numerous state squads for the Al Larson Tournament and Carrington Duals Friday and Saturday, December 9-10. See the related article on page 7 for match times.
