Area nonprofit provides support to cancer patients

Do you know of someone who has been diagnosed with cancer who needs help with transportation costs or emotional support? Help may be just a phone call away.

Help for Help and Healing (HHH), the Jamestown Cancer Support Group, is a non-profit, all volunteer organization that offers assistance to cancer patients and their friends and families with transportation costs. They receive funding through generous donations and an annual fundraiser, the Quarter Craze Basket Auction.

The organization serves residents of Foster, Eddy and Wells Counties, as well as Stutsman, Barnes, Dickey, Griggs, LaMoure, Logan and McIntosh.

HHH was founded by Jamestown resident Laurel Haroldson after she lost her husband Tom to cancer in 2007. She had met many other cancer patients and their families during his five-year battle, and she discovered that many did not have the support system that she and her husband were so grateful to have. Many of Tom’s friends offered various types of help, including transportation to treatments, meal preparation, household and outdoor maintenance, visits, prayers and listening ears.

After learning that so many others did not have the help they needed to navigate, and knowing there were also plenty of generous souls in the community who would be willing to offer assistance, she made it her mission to create a network to connect the two.

“Hope is the most important word we have. We have hope, we give hope, we believe in hope, and we hope that we can be of help,” Halvorson says.

“Financial support such as yours helps relieve worry and stress and just knowing total strangers want to help gives spiritual and emotional support – we know we don’t have to go through this alone on any level. Again, thank you for your generosity,” wrote one recipient.

If you or a loved one who lives in one of the counties listed above has been diagnosed with cancer, please contact HHH. Simply give them the name, address and phone number of the cancer patient who could use a gas card and/or cancer care bag, and they will help using available resources.

Donations and memorials are graciously accepted. Anyone interested in volunteering for HHH and providing support to cancer patients and their families are also encouraged to reach out.
