Rocket Rebound: NR-S defeated Lady Raiders by 9 after 13-point deficit

On Tuesday, Jan. 3, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets hosted the Drake-Anamoose Lady Raiders.

The Rockets and Lady Raiders each kicked off the game strong.

 Kelsie Belquist was found pushing through Lady Raiders' defenders, scoring two field goals in the first quarter. But Drake-Anamoose's center, Taryn Sieg, drained four field goals to take a 4-point lead over the Rockets at the end of the first quarter.

Kaiya O'Connor got fired up in the second quarter to swish two field goals for the Rockets. But the Lady Raiders still seemed to keep a lead over the Rockets after a 3-pointer from beyond the arc by Bailey Clott and two field goals each from Jamie Lemer and Mariah Mack. At the half, the Rockets were down by 13 points.

The second half of the game was comeback time for the Rockets.

With many fouls on the Lady Raiders, Madisen Myhre, Ava Peterson and Belquist were all sent to the line to shoot free-throws. Out of the nine free-throw attempts, the Rockets swished seven. Halie Fletschock of the Lady Raiders scored big in the third quarter, with three field goals. The Rockets were now down only by 10 points.

Full court pressure time by the Rockets. The Rockets went steal-for-steal in the fourth quarter, scoring a total of 25 points. Nearly half of those points were scored by O'Connor after many steals. Belquist swished the Rockets only 3-pointer in the game in the fourth quarter.

With great defense and offense by the Rockets, the Lady Raiders were taken down 53-44.

Top scorers for the Rockets were O'Connor with 20 and Belquist with 16. As for the Lady Raiders, Sieg led the team with 14, followed by Fletschock with 10.

The Rockets' junior varsity team also came out victorious with a 44-30 win over the Lady Raiders. Katie Allmaras and Emmie Belquist led the Rockets in points, with 10 each. Mariah Mack held the most points for the Lady Raiders with 14, followed by Shaylee Hase with 6.

The Rockets took on the Barnes County North Bison (A,JH) on Thursday, Jan. 5. On Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Rockets will travel to Fessenden to take on the Harvey/Wells County Hornets (A,B,8,7) in their first Super Region 4 contest of the season starting at 4 p.m.
