On Saturday, Jan. 7, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets, offensively, played their best game of the season. Unfortunately for them, the Wilton-Wing Miners were even better.
The first quarter of Saturday's game in Wilton was a back and forth battle. The Rockets, in particular Easton Simon, were shooting contested jumpers and hitting their mark. The Miners, however, were showing off just-as-impressive accuracy from downtown.
In the first eight minutes alone they cashed in three shots from beyond the arc, and that was just the opening act. In the second quarter, they scored another four 3-pointers, three of which were rattled off by Miners' sophomore Hunter Wolff.
Meanwhile, senior Trey Koski was amassing field goals at will. Koski and Wolff alone accounted for 17 points in the second quarter.
By comparison, the Rockets could only score 10 second-quarter points, and the result was a 40-24 halftime lead for Wilton-Wing.
Thankfully for the Rockets, the second half was a much better showing offensively. DJ Mudgett and Trevor Waldo were significant point scorers in the third quarter, and Easton Benz and Porter Granger seemed to score whenever they drove to the basket.
With everyone playing so well on offense, NR-S amassed 66 points by the end of regulation, the most they'd scored in any game this season. Their previous highest point total was 56 in their loss to Carrington.
The Miners, though, were more than up to the challenge. 3-pointers continued hitting their mark and NR-S continued to be incapable of slowing down Koski, who ended the game with 24 points.
The result was an 82-66 win for Wilton-Wing, who snapped a three game losing streak with the victory.
Leading scorers for NR-S were Easton Simon with 18, DJ Mudgett with 14, and Trevor Waldo with 11. Meanwhile, a new face also appeared on the court for the Rockets, as junior Aston Reimche, a 6'6" transfer from Harvey/Wells County, played meaningful minutes on Saturday for both junior varsity and varsity.
Rockets' head coach and the entire Rockets team will be hoping his added presence can help them reverse course on what has so far been a winless season.
The Rockets' next matchup was against Washburn on Saturday, Jan. 14 at New Rockford. That game will be covered in the next edition of the Transcript.
