Rockets outlast Woodchucks, fall to Cardinals in region play

On Friday, Jan. 27, the New Rockford-Sheyenne girls' basketball team traveled nearly to the Canadian border to take on the St. John Lady Woodchucks, in yet another Super Region 4 matchup.

The Rockets went in with a 11-3 win/loss ratio, which was quite similar to St. John's, which was 11-4.

If you watched this game, you know how much of a nailbiter it was.

The Lady Woodchucks held a 5-point lead over the Rockets after the first half. St. John senior Natalie Decoteau made up half of the Lady Woodchucks 18 points.

The Rockets couldn't seem to slow down the Lady Woodchucks in the second quarter either. With the Rockets only scoring 10 points to St. John's 17, the Rockets were down 23-35 at the end of the first half.

But the second half took a turn of events for both the Rockets and the Lady Woodchucks.

The Rockets scored a total of 14 points in the third quarter, holding the Lady Woodchucks to only two points, scored by Alani Morin. These 14 points scored in the third quarter brought the score to 37-37.

With one quarter to go, only one team could walk away victorious.

With big 3-pointers by Kaiya O'Connor and Ava Peterson, and 4-of-6 free throw attempts made by Kelsie Belquist, the Rockets had defeated the Lady Woodchucks 52-49.

Peterson led the Rockets in points, with a total of 13, followed by Belquist with 12. As for the Lady Woodchucks, Decoteau held the most points with 21 total. Also scoring in double digits for the Lady Woodchucks was Aubree Jeanotte with 11.

Tuesday, Jan. 31

against LA/E/M

On Tuesday, Jan. 31 the Rockets hosted the Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich Cardinals.

The adrenaline from the past nine consecutive wins seemed like it came to an end during this Super Region 4 matchup.

The Cardinals came out ready to play, and eager for a win. Three-pointers were their strong point, with four of the six scored in the first quarter between Jaya Henderson, Meredith Romfo and Halle Jabs. However, the Rockets seemed to only hold a six point deficit in the first quarter, with Kelsie Belquist's three field goals.

And yet another 3-pointer came from Romfo in the second quarter, for the Cardinals to take a 10-point lead at the end of the first half.

The Rockets came out in the second half with less momentum than the first. The Rockets scored seven points to LA/E/M's 14.

With the 17-point deficit, there was no return for the Rockets. The Cardinals scored another 19 points in the fourth quarter, to take the 63-22 win over the Rockets.

Lead scorers for the Cardinals were Henderson with 19, Romfo with 15, and Cora Badding with 13.

Belquist was the lone Rocket to score in double digits with 14.

The Rockets traveled to Carrington on Thursday, Feb. 2 to take on the local rivals. On Friday, Feb. 3, the Rockets attempted at another Super Region 4 win over the North Prairie Cougars as they traveled to Rolette.
