Bail set for alleged Sheyenne bar shooter

POSTED THURSDAY, FEB. 23 AT 4 P.M.

Nicholas Poitra, the man police say shot and killed 30-year-old Troyal Thumb at Rindy's Bar in Sheyenne on Sunday, Feb. 19, has been taken into custody.

During a bond hearing on Thursday, Feb. 23, Eddy County State's Attorney, Ashley Lies, recommended bail be set at $1.5 million dollars cash, arguing that Poitra is a "clear danger to society."

Poitra, who was representing himself at the hearing via Zoom, elected not to respond to Lies' recommendation, and District Court Judge John Hovey set bail at $1.5 million cash.

Poitra's next court appearance is set for Thursday, March 9 at 9 a.m. at the Eddy County Courthouse in New Rockford, where he will appear in person.

Eddy County Sheriff, Paul Lies, said Poitra was discovered at around noon on Wednesday, February 22 on County Road 12 in Eddy County, between 27th and 26th Street.

Poitra is currently held at the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center in Devils Lake, N.D.

On Tuesday, Poitra was formally charged with AA Felony murder, as well as robbery with a firearm (a Class B felony), seven counts of terrorizing with a dangerous weapon (each a Class C felony), and unlawful possession of a firearm, also a Class C felony.
