A 10-0 run late in the third quarter propelled the HWC Hornets to a 64-51 win over the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets in New Rockford on Friday, Feb. 10.
The Rockets and Hornets played an even first quarter, with NR-S taking a quick 4-0 lead, but saw it evaporate quickly. Gabe Allmaras scored eight points in the first quarter for HWC, but a three-pointer from Easton Benz tied the score at 13 all, and the Hornets led by two points after eight minutes.
The Hornets, behind a 9-2 run to start the second quarter, expanded the lead to 24-15 at the midway point. Lucas Yri’s back-to-back threes for NR-S helped pull the Rockets to within 26-23 at halftime.
A deuce from Keaton Keller and a three from Tate Grossman lifted the Hornets to a 32-26 advantage early in the third quarter, but six straight points from Bennett Meier gave the Rockets their first lead since the first quarter, 35-34. Allmaras scored four and Grossman added two old-fashioned three pointers for HWC, as they exploded late in the third for a 10-0 run and a 46-38 lead after three.
Allmaras added six of the first eight points for the Hornets in the fourth, as they threatened to run away with the game, leading 54-38. The Rockets continued to play solid ball and cut into the lead bit by bit. Kage Walford hit a three pointer with 2:19 to play, and then Meier added another three to cut the lead to eight. Yri’s third three, late in the game, cut the lead to single digits at 60-51, but two steals from HWC resulted in easy points at the end of the game as the Hornets held on for the victory.
Allmaras and Grossman were both over 20 points on the night for the Hornets, with 22 and 21, respectively. Thorson was also in double figures with 10 points.
NR-S was led by Meier with 15, and Yri with 13 points. Allmaras and Grossman both pulled down nine rebounds, with Grossman dishing out six assists and four steals in the HWC win.
The win for HWC moved their season record to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in Region 4, while the Rockets dropped to 2-13 and 1-6 in region action.
