From March 31 through April 1, The Triple Threat capped off their strong season at the esports state tournament in Grand Forks.
The Triple Threat's only team to qualify for state was their Fortnite team, which includes New Rockford-Sheyenne's Kadyn Abell, an eighth-grader, and four players from Garrison.
Fortnite is a third-person battle royale game, in which players are dropped onto a large map in teams of three, and must battle until only one team is left standing.
During the regular season, The Triple Threat's varsity Fortnite team earned an impressive 5-1 overall record, more than good enough to qualify for the state tournament at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.
On the first day of the state tournament, all 12 of the Fortnite teams that qualified for state competed in their first three games. They played their second three games on day two, and the combined points from all six games would determine the state champion.
Points are handed out for eliminations and finishing position.
Unfortunately for The Triple Threat, they only scored two points on day one, putting them just shy of last place.
Thankfully, day two saw significant improvement, as they managed to score 12 more points and bring their total for the tournament to 14.
With 14 overall points, The Triple Threat secured a respectable 6th place finish. Norman County East, a Minnesota school, took the state championship in Fortnite with 81 points overall.
