Hospital and Nurses Week
This week CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington will be celebrating Nurses Week and Hospital Week. Nurses Week runs May 6-12, and Hospital Week May 7-13. In honor of these celebrations, CHI St. Alexius Health recognizes their employees, and thanks them for their continued support and dedication to our community, patients and facility.
On Friday, May 5, Nurses Week was kicked off early with The DAISY Award celebration. This celebration is held yearly during Nurses Week to honor those nurses nominated by patients or their families for their outstanding care. All nominations are submitted blindly to the Patient and Family Advisory Council, and the council chooses the winner. This year we had two nominations: Karen Munkeby and Brenda Hoeckle. Both nominees were recognized at a breakfast ceremony where cinnamon rolls were served. Cinnamon rolls are served every year at this celebration per the DAISY foundation’s request.
The DAISY foundation was started by the Patrick Barnes family in 1999 to thank nurses who exemplify extraordinary care. The Barnes family lost their son to an auto-immune disease, but what they remembered from the experience was the wonderful care they received from the nursing staff caring for Patrick. During Patrick’s hospitalization, he had a very poor appetite. One day his father arrived with a cinnamon roll. Patrick took a bite of the cinnamon roll and ended up eating the whole thing. When his father left that night, he asked that he bring cinnamon rolls for all the nurses in the morning. The DAISY foundation hopes that whenever a nurse smells or tastes a cinnamon roll, or bakes with cinnamon, the aroma will trigger their senses and remind them of the positive difference they make in a patient’s and/or family’s life each and every day.
DAISY nomination forms can be found in both the clinic and hospital lobbies, acute care nurses station, and clinic exam rooms. If you know an extraordinary nurse that you would like to nominate for the DAISY award, please grab a nomination form from one of these locations, or call 701-652-7166 and we will make sure you receive a nomination form.
Hospital Week is just that: it is a week-long celebration honoring our staff. During Hospital Week, annual awards are presented to the Provider of the Year, Nurse of the Year, Manager of the Year and Employee of the Year. Employees nominate staff for these awards, and they also vote on the winners. The nominations are blinded and sent out via SurveyMonkey for staff to submit their vote. We will honor each winner by presenting their department with a balloon bouquet and certificate for our gift shop or dietary, and their picture will be taken and displayed on our wall of honor.
In addition to the annual awards, we celebrate each day of Hospital Week with either a special meal or a snack. Each employee will also receive a Hospital Week gift. These are small tokens of our appreciation for their continued support to our community, patients and the facility. Without each and every individual who serves within these walls, we would not be able to do the amazing things we do each and every day.
In honor of Nurses Week and Hospital Week, I ask you to thank any nurse or hospital employee you see this week. Thank them for their continued dedication to healthcare, and particularly to our community.
