The Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox didn't have a great three-game stretch between Friday, April 28 and Tuesday, May 2.
The stretch began on April 28, when the Sox took on the Kidder County Wolves and the South Border Mustangs in Steele, N.D.
Kidder County was up first, and they wasted no time building a dominant lead. They amassed five runs in the first inning alone, before adding another run in the second inning and four more in each of the third and fourth innings.
The Sox, meanwhile, weren't able to score a run until the fifth inning, when Luke Yri and Alex Weisenburger earned an RBI each.
That wasn't enough to prolong the game, however. With a score of 2-14, the 10-run mercy rule kicked in after five innings and the game was over.
Only four of the Wolves' 14 runs were earned, as the Black Sox committed six errors.
Later that day, the Sox played a much more competitive game against the Mustangs of South Border.
Connor Knatterud was on the mound for SNR, and he kept his team in the game during his 6.2 innings on the mound. The Black Sox' defense also improved, committing only one error in seven innings.
But once again, the Sox' offense wasn't able to keep up. Mustangs' pitcher Berkley Frantz held the Sox to just five hits, and propelled his team to a shutout win. The final score was 0-4.
The last game of the three was a rematch against the Mustangs, and it was by far the most competitive.
For 6.5 innings the Black Sox played superb baseball, and Keaton Cudworth was a big reason why. In his 6.1 innings on the mound he allowed just five hits, one earned run and struck out eight batters.
A win seemed in order when an offensive breakout propelled the Sox to a 4-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning, breaking a 1-1 tie which had lasted since the fifth inning.
However, the Sox then suffered a defensive breakdown in the bottom of the inning. Throwing errors and wild pitches allowed the Mustangs to score four unearned runs, giving them a walkoff 5-4 victory.
The losses brought the Sox' overall record to 1-6. The team has clearly shown signs of improvement, however, and they'll be hoping that trend continues moving forward.
