Weisenburger leads Sox to victory in Rugby

After a disappointing stretch of losses, the Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox marked a tally in the win column on Saturday, May 6.

The Sox traveled to Rugby for a double-header against the Velva-Drake/Anamoose Aggies and Rugby Panthers, and they were looking to recover from a 6-game skid.

Thankfully for them, Alex Weisenburger would be starting against Rugby on the mound that day.

In five innings of work, Weisenburger allowed just two hits and no runs, gave up only three walks and struck out seven Panthers batters – it was a classic pitching gem, and unlike Keaton Cudworth's gem a few games earlier, this time the pitcher would get a win.

The Sox defense didn't have a single error in the game, while the offense earned four runs.

Cudworth, Brody Weisenburger and Haydon Meier each had an RBI, partly capitalizing on poor defense from Rugby, who committed four errors. After five innings, the game's scheduled distance, the score was 4-0 in the Sox' favor.

The victory was their first since defeating Harvey/Wells County to start the season, but the good times didn't last long. Later in the day, SNR lost the game to the Aggies 2-12, bringing their overall record to 2-8.

Prior to the double header in Rugby, the Black Sox were hosted by the Carrington Cardinals on Thursday, May 4, with a field finally dry enough for baseball.

The game also marked the first glimpse of Carrington's brand new scoreboard in action, and the Cards certainly gave it a grand debut.

Carrington had lost only one game all season entering Thursday's matchup, and unfortunately for the Black Sox, they weren't about to lose a second game in front of their first home crowd this year.

After giving up a run to start the game, Carrington responded by scoring two of their own in the bottom of the first, followed by three more in the second.

However, walks issued by Carrington pitcher Hudson Schmitz to start the third inning allowed the Sox to stay relevant, as an error and an RBI single brought two SNR runners across home plate.

Connor Knatterud had a particularly good day at the plate against Carrington, getting on base after all four plate appearances with two hits, two walks and two runs scored.

After 2.5 innings, Carrington's advantage was just two runs, but that's as close as it would get.

By the bottom of the sixth inning, Cardinals batters had racked up another six runs, while Schmitz and Ethan Roller had steadied things on the mound, only allowing one more run after the third inning.

So, the stage was set for Carrington senior Jack Erickson when he approached the plate with two men on and no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Erickson took advantage of a pitch out over the plate and launched it over the left-field fence.

The 3-run blast gave the Cardinals a 10-run advantage, enough to trigger the mercy rule and end the afternoon's ball game an inning early.

Weather pending, the Black Sox were scheduled to play against Kidder County on Thursday, May 11, and against Dakota Prairie on Saturday, May 13 for a double header. Those games will be covered in the next edition of the Transcript.
