Street project nearing completion

Chip seal to be done in phases starting June 12

Completion of the New Rockford Street Improvement Project is fast approaching.

Bituminous Paving has begun paving the last few streets in town and will soon begin the work of chip sealing.

The chip seal will be applied to all paved streets in New Rockford, and should help prevent future deterioration.

The tentative chip seal schedule has been shared with the Transcript, so that residents can make sure their vehicles aren't parked on the streets when it comes time to seal their street.

Chip sealing will begin on Monday, June 12, weather permitting, and the process will be completed in three sections.

The first section will include all streets west of the railroad tracks that cut through downtown, beginning with 13th Street North and 5th Avenue North. They'll work their way south from there.

If all goes well, the first section should be completed on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Work on the second section will begin on Tuesday, June 13 and go through Thursday, which encompasses all streets between the railroad tracks and Hwy. 281. Again, they'll begin on streets to the north and work their way south.

Finally, all streets east of Hwy. 281 should be completed on Thursday and Friday.

"No parking" signs will be posted 24 hours in advance, and residents are encouraged to keep their vehicles off the streets.

Public Works Superintendent Bruce Hirtchert said all campers, boats, pontoons and vehicles need to be off the streets. Even sump pump hoses shouldn't be leading out to the street while chip sealing is underway.

It is also against City Ordinance to have trailers, campers and boats/pontoons on the street for longer than 24 hours.

Once chip sealing is complete, It's still important to keep the streets clear while streets are swept following the chip seal, which is expected to begin June 19.

"Streets should really be clear until probably the 23rd," said Hirchert.

The process is the last step of the New Rockford Street Improvement Project – a multi-million dollar investment into every gravel and dirt road within the city limits of New Rockford.

The project was supposed to be completed by the end of fall last year.

Bituminous Paving is being assessed a $1,500 per day penalty for liquidated damages.

Wade Senger of Interstate Engineering has said that the new goal is to have everything completed by the 4th of July.
