Weathering the Storm

On Friday, June 16, the New Rockford Post 30 Black Sox earned their first win of the season with a dominant victory over the Devils Lake Storm's B team.

Connor Knatterud was on the mound for the Sox, and early on it appeared he might be in for a rough outing.

Thanks to a few hits, a walk and a costly error, the Storm managed to score four runs in the top of the first – a start reminiscent of many other Black Sox losses throughout this summer and spring.

Thankfully for Post 30, however, that would be the end of Knatterud's struggles. He returned to the mound for the second inning and would go on to prevent a single additional runner from crossing home plate.

Excluding the first inning, Knatterud allowed just three hits, no runs and struck out three batters, and a big part of that success was also solid defense.

Outside of that costly first-inning error, the Sox fielded the ball well and even earned a pair of double plays.

One heads-up double play was made in the top of the fourth, when the Sox left-fielder Haydon Meier caught a hard-hit line drive and fired the ball to Luke Yri at second base, catching out a Devils Lake runner who'd strayed into no-man's land between second and third.

From the batter's box, meanwhile, Post 30 was having a field day.

They matched the Storm in the first inning with four runs of their own, and tacked on five more in the second.

A pitching change slowed down the Black Sox offense for a few innings, but they lashed out once again in the bottom of the sixth with another four runs. That brought the score to 14-4 and triggered the 10-run mercy rule.

Offensive standouts for Post 30 were Alex Weisenburger and Luke Yri, who went 3-of-3 from the batter's box with three RBIs each.

 Thomas Allmaras also enjoyed a good game both offensively and defensively. From the batter's box he went 2-of-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

The victory over Devils Lake, as well as a loss earlier in the week to South Border, brought the Sox' overall record to 1-3 ahead of the Legion tournament in Jamestown and Valley City which began on Saturday, June 23.

Post 30's next home game is scheduled for Wednesday, June 28 against Kidder County at 5 p.m.

The Black Sox Babe Ruth team, meanwhile, suffered a trio of losses on June 14, 15 and 16, including a nearly incredible comeback win against Carrington that fell one run short.

Their other defeats came at the hands of Hillsboro/Central Valley and the Devils Lake Storm.

The losses brought their overall record to 1-4. Their next home game is also scheduled for Wednesday, June 28 against Kidder County, but will start earlier in the day at noon.
