On Tuesday, Oct. 10, 12 sophomores were inducted into the local chapter of the National Honor Society.
Farmers Union Insurance agent Lucas Schumacher gave the annual address during a 30-minute ceremony in the NR-S gymnasium.
Schumacher was a member of NHS in high school, and he addressed all four of the pillars: character, scholarship, leadership and service.
"These pillars not only coordinate with NHS, they also coordinate with life," he said.
"With today's technology right at your fingertips, you can literally Google and learn how to do just about anything ... the level of academic achievement and self-learning you can obtain this day and age, what an opportunity you all have."
Schumacher added, "I believe if you have a strong character, the rest of the pillars will almost automatically fall into place," and concluded, "You will make mistakes, you will fail. Learn from those experiences."
The National Honor Society officers led the candle-lighting ceremony, with a candle to represent each pillar: President Keaton Cudworth, scholarship; Vice President Ava Bullinger, service; Secretary Trysta Thumb, leadership and Historian Kelsie Belquist, character.
The inductees and current NHS members each took their turn reciting the pledge as a group.
Amy Cudworth is in her fourth year as the NHS advisor. She delivered opening remarks and introduced each of the inductees during the ceremony. Superintendent Jill Louters gave the closing comments and presented each inductee with a certificate.
