The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets Cross Country team wrapped up their regular season with a meet in Cooperstown on Friday, Oct. 13.
Once again, multiple Rocket runners earned their best times of the season, and just in time for the upcoming regional cross country meet on Saturday, Oct. 21.
In the junior varsity girls’ race, the Rockets’ Makaya Heskin was the only runner from NR-S, and took home an impressive 9th place with her personal best time of 16 minutes and 32 seconds (16:32).
In the junior varsity boys’ race, Vinnie Ruppell nearly crossed the finish line in the podium places, taking 4th place with a time of 13:15.
Seth Greiner crossed the line less than a minute later in 15th position with a time of 14:11. Then came Jacob Louters in 25th place with his personal best time of 15:45, and August Meier in 28th place with a time of 16:07.
Meanwhile, for the first time this season, the Rockets’ cross country team had a runner compete in the varsity race. In cross country, varsity races are a five-kilometer (5K) race distance and junior varsity races are three kilometers long (3K).
Stepping up to that challenge was 7th-grader Gabe Smith, who crossed the line in 95th place with a time of 21:56.
With that, the regular season has come to an end. The Rockets ran at the regional meet in Cooperstown on Saturday, Oct. 21.
Head coach Joe Greiner announced on Oct. 15 that three NR-S runners, Gabe Smith, Neecie Swart and Seth Greiner, will all be taking on the varsity 5K at regionals.
“I can't say how truly proud I am of them to take this race on,” said Greiner.
